Oops. 'can't wax the vents

Interior Exterior

Q:
Okay so I'm out detailing my Elise and accidentally spill some Maguires #7 show car glaze on the engine vents. I didn't really notice how much I had spilled, and rubbed on until it dried. Every method I've tried to get that stuff off just seems to make the problem worse. Any suggestions?

A:
Some kind of solvent or wax remover. GR-40, 3M Tar and Adhesive Remover, etc. Then try scrubbing with some kind of brush or towel. Most rubber/vinyl dressings will only hide the problem.
#7 is as very oily product, but it should come off.

I've had good luck with Aerospace 303 protectant in removing "overwax" from trim.

When I used Meguire's Deep Crystal wax and got it on the plastic, I had luck using ArmorAll's Multi-Purpose Auto Cleaner - let it sit for a couple of minutes, then scrubbed a bunch with a tooth brush.
Then I used another ArmorAll-like product to bring out the luster in the plastic again.

It might not have been all you..the cars show up that way more or less. I could not find a glop that would last more than 2-3 weeks. So I painted all the grills black. Much less effort and I think they look nicer too. I also painted the yellow perimeter that used to be visible as you look through the engine cover grill openings. Now it's all black.

You may think this sounds crazy but if you don't have any of the above mentioned products you might try peanut butter.

Would that be chunky, or smooth?

I wouldn't do that unless you want rats sleeping in your engine bay, not that the heat of the engine combine with the winter temps isn't already doing that but at least it's one less attraction for the rats.

Thanks all. Great help.
Peanut butter... engine heat... peanut oil... DOUGHNUTS (mmmmmmm... doughnuts!!)

A:
Yes hot peanut butter could have a very ill smell. Peanut butter has been used to remove that wax that gets on black plastic parts that you should not have got wax on in first place. But the 303 works great.
A:
And Mother's Peanut Butter Remover works wonders on the peanut butter. But it contains traces of peanuts, so use caution.
A:
I like Mother's back to black also. I think it is like watered down Elmers glue, or something more permadent. Don't let it dry on your paint. No big deal, it comes off with hot water, then more cleaner wax. Mine has been on a while, still looks like fresh black plastic.

A:
I dunno about you, but I think my beer contains traces of Meguiar's Mother's peanut butter about now.

I got tired of trying to keep my grills looking nice, so I had them all painted semi gloss black.
A:
I use a 3M vinyl cleaner/conditioner with great results on those sorts of parts.
I'll have to get back on the part number.

A variety of different glops can helps the issue. But not for long. Paint gets rid of all the upkeep efforts, more or less. It's way more forgiving.

Did you have them painted for you? Did you do all of them including the rear ones? and if so, ballpark cost?

A:
I had J. Edwin Refinishing in Austin, TX paint all of the plastic grills and louvers on my Elise semi-gloss black.
In retrospect, I would only have the louvers and side grills painted. It's hard to notice the grills in the front and back and not worth the added cost.
