Track seats

Q:
It depends entirely on you... I honestly never paid much attention to the harness in the passengers side after installing it. The one time I used it, when I let a friend take my car out for a touring session, I did think that the "euro design" harness (on the driver's side) seemed more comfortable.
In hindsight, my reasoning for getting two different harnesses was idiotic. I figured that since I rarely take passengers on the track, and when I do I don't push anywhere near as hard as I do when alone, that it wasn't worth spending an extra $200 on the nicer harness setup for the passenger side. Amazingly, most of the instructors I've taken out on the track with me have preferred to use the stock belt system anyway. I think the harness on the passenger side was used two or three times at most by friends who I took out for rides.

Very nice. Is that an OEM seat on the passanger side? In the NE we have to have restraint systems of equal level at a HPDE.
How did you mount the lap belts? Do they mount to the OEM lap mounts? The inserts look to be at a good height for me based on the BWR bar in the back.
I love the CF seat I got from Shinoo

So I took a knife to my seats this weekend. Scary, and I would never do it again, but all in all a good mod. Safety was #1 priority, so I put the inserts where they were going to be as HANS-friendly as possible. Pictures of other mods just seem to be too low, and the potential of spine compression doesn't sound fun.
But I had to do a LOT of tweaking along the way, and was faced with working around the angled ribs in the center of the headrest. PITA. Here's a pic before I cleaned off all the glue. Max

Maxxfish,
I, too, cut inserts this past weekend. And while I agree that the locations I and others have used are probably lower than optimal, I did not use your solution for several reasons:
1) I was concerned that the belts would be too close together for my scrawny neck; and
2) I don't think there is enough material left in the seat for the head restraint to withstand a large impact.
Let us know how the separation works for you. Hope you never test the second concern.

The lightweight Ultrashield spec Miata seats are 10.2 to 16.2 pounds depending on what width you get. I doubt the two widest sizes would fit so it would definitely save weight over the stock seats. Most other track seats besides the Reverie cf seats are heavier than the stock seats. I think it would look cool to have aluminum seats in a car without the touring package.
A:
The top of my inserts are above my shoulders. The BMR bar is actually an inch or two higher than that. There should not be any issue with spinal compression. I was able to maintain 5.5 inches btwn the inserts which is sufficient for my pencil neck. Inserts as close as those in the picture may be a problem expecially if you are running 3 inch shoulder harnesses. You might get away with two inch. A turtle neck shirt might be required equipment.

Where on earth are you guys finding aftermarket BLACK corbeau seat inserts? I can't for the life of me find anything but chrome.

Ordered the lightweight, 15 1/2" version back in November. They told me the delivery date would be 90 days due to an aluminum shortage. 45 days later they told me that the delivery date would be another 120 days. Canceled order as with the bracket fabrication would put me well into the race season. Contacted the company and they told me they were operating at 110% of capacity and they couldn't possibly deliver it any faster. Sounds like a company that could use a bit of expansion advise.
A:
Call corbeau directly. Ask for the chrome style in black. They don't have them on the websites but are available.

Eyelise,
I have the 4Tress harness bar. I wonder if it is a design defect that the bar mounts several inches below the stock belt attachment.
A:
Got mine 5.5 inches apart. Photo shows angle of harness bar vs slots.

And now the photo...

The bar height looks fine. You want it about even with the slots and shoulders. The harness should go fairly straight back. I little above doesn't look to be a problem. Do you have a 5 pt? Are the laps mounted to the OEM lap mounts? I'm going to put eyebolts thru the floor and attach antisubs to the OEM lap mounts for a 6pt. set-up.

BTW, I made a couple of braces for my CRD mount. It jiggled quite a bit with the video cam. I haven't tried it yet. I did post pics. a month back or so.
And now the photo...

So for all you people with the harness holes in your stock seats now -- those Corbeau inserts look to be around 2-2.5 inches wide. Stock racing belts are 3" unless you have some other funky type...
What do you do, bow your shoulder belts to make them fit through? Permanently?
