Interior Exterior
Q:
I just had my seats and door panels reupholstered to replace the standard cloth with a red & black houndstooth pattern. The decision to do this was made quite some time ago, but it took a long time to find the material. They only just started manufacturing it again after a 30 year hiatus. By the time I got the material and made the arrangements for the work to be done, the OEM material on the driver's seat had stated to show significant signs of wear. A spot about 5" square on the bottom of the seat was turning a much lighter shade of gray.

You'll have to bring that to CC for us to see!

It was there this morning. Where were you?

I like it, it's definitely has it's own style and look which is cool. I think where you goofed is in not keeping the larger door area in black leather and doing the teardrop piece in the red/black pattern. The red leather on red door paint look is not a easy flow to the eyes because the color is a mis-match. Doing it the other way around would not cause this effect IMHO

Ow! Poke stick of death!
I skipped out and decided to sleep in today

That would match very well with the weave pattern in carbon fiber trim pieces.

Did the uphostlerer put the new material on top of the old, or did they remove the old (using the OEM padding in either situation). Or did they completely replace the center section with new material and new padding?
I may have something similar done to an 06 seat, but I want to retain the probax foam.

Sharp Looking!!

amusingly enough when looking for hounds tooth patterned fabric in the UK you will bet blank stares. they call it... cats tooth.

Me likes the seats. I think some black screw buttons on the door panels would look good.
I always thought it would be cool do do an interior with my tartan. Mine is gray and black so it's not too obnoxious. I contacted these people, and they actually said that customers have used their kilt material for car seat covers.

As soon as we put the door panels on it struck us that the red cloth to red paint transition didn't look right. The seats look great surrounded in black and the door panel is bordered by black on the bottom (the sill), but it just needed something on the top. We are going to have some black piping installed along the top edge. Haven't yet decided how far to take it down the sides, if at all.
It's interesting, the red fabric and paint are an almost perfect match, but in a picture, the black tends to make the red in the fabric look darker than it really is. That's probably due to the 50/50 red/black blocks that connect the red and black ones, at a distance they blend into a single color.
We're also looking at some options for the four bolts along the top. Interestingly, they seem to show up more on the new fabric than on the old black fabric. Not sure why that is.

Reminds me of my TR8 interior.

That would look fabulous with the black leather. I'm going to look for a black alternative to the silver bolts, but it also needs some type of washer to keep the bolt from twisting and loosening the threads. Ideally the fabric would have holes punched into it and some reinforcing material glued to the back. Even then, I think a washer would be thright way to go.

I don't know what he did. You're the second one to ask, so I will find out.

Although you can't see it in the photographs, the material itself is a twill weave which would add to that effect.

I really like the concept, but as you've said it doesnt quite work along the door top. I would have gone with a grey/black on a red car, but then it wouldn't be much different. What if you had the door tops painted black? Maybe do the center console and the HVAC surround the same?
Somewhat related - have you guys seen that the new GTI's cloth interior option has a retro tartan design? It's awesome.

Nice one, Chris, can't wait to see it in person !
