Interior Exterior
Q:
I am about 6'2" and was frustrated by the trim on the hard top that blocks some of the view upward. It extends about 3/4 of an inch lower than the soft top. I removed the trim panel which gives the visibility of the soft top but it looks terrible. I trimmed about 2 inches off of the front of the panel and recovered it. It looks great and no more claustrophobia. I can even see stoplights when I am the first car.

Can you take some pics please

Try a lightinsight for awesome redlight visibility. It's a small wide angle fresnel lens that looks "upward". Web site of the same name.

I have one of these in my Mini Cooper. I agree with Stan, they work great.

I love it. Wish I thought of it. Was the covering hard to handle? Lets see a pic.

Buz, what did you recover it with? Also, please post some pics.

Ordered one.

This sounds like a great mod. Please post pics.

I've had it for a year and love it. The mod will still help though.

Seems like the same properties that allow you to see 'upward' at traffic lights would also cause the sun to see 'downward' into your eyes. Is this an issue, or does the lightinsight somehow work in only one direction?

I have not had an issue with the sun at all.

I just leave off the trim piece.

I'd be curious what the focal length of this lens is. You can easily tell if you hold it up and try to focus sunlight to a small spot (on something other than the elise) and estimate the distance from the lens to the image plane.
Suffice to say, if the focal distance is such that it falls within the space of the interior, this lens might be problematic on sunny days. The smallest distance to be wary of would be from the lens to steering wheel/IP console/dash... the longest would be to the seats. If it has a focal length outside of this range or doesn't focus all that tightly, then there shouldn't be any problems.

I've been playing with one for the last week or so on my Miata. The sun does indeed get concentrated, but it appears so small that it isn't a bother. The sun shining directly into the eyes is much, much more annoying.
The traffic lights appear very small, and you can't make out much detail, but you can definitely see the color of the traffic light...

Lotus recommends against that to help lessen the likelihood of injury in an impact. There's a reason it's padded...
If you're really really short or wear 5/6 pt harnesses all the time no problem but otherwise....
