Elise Hatchback Concept

Interior Exterior

Q:
My latest idea. Basically, to replace the the rollbar cover and rear lid with a flip-up hatch with glass insert. The S1 exige looking insert could serve as a place to put the keyhole or even a functional air intake (supercharger, anyone?! )
What do you guys think?
EDIT: Updated with more images.

How's the heat going to escape?
A:
Don't bother me with details!
A:
That looks cool. I will bet it would add 5 mph to the top end. Just add a vent at the trailing edge of the window.
A:
glass is HEAVY
A:
Now that is something I would buy!! It looks so good...I'm hungry!

thought about plexiglass with drilled vents?

I believe one of the purposes of that funny looking piece in the center top of the hatch was to provide place for a hot air exhaust grill. Since they chose a quite different design for the S2 Exige, maybe it wasn't effective enough though.
A:
Why even do glass? Just do mesh vents like an Exige. The glass behind the seats closes off the passenger compartment. All you'd need is some way to seal up the trunk.
I thought about doing this a while back when I was debating if the Exige is really worth the $15K difference if I were to trade in. That seems like the easiest way do a ersatz Exige. Add a wing, splitter, and side scoops and you'd be all set. Elise usa said they were working on one but it would be part of an Exige conversion kit. Of course, they haven't come out with anything they said they would, so that doesn't mean much.
We seriously need to get a good aftermarket fiberglass company involved in the Elise market. I really want a set of paintable side scoops, and I also would buy an Exige style hatch.

In combination with a factory supercharger set-up... sign me up! I always did like the S1 Exige plexiglass back end look.
A:
I did a version using plexi with drilled vents.
I also posted the original pic with no hatch.
A:
Engine cover conversion, several versions, spoilers, etc too:

A:
Stan, are you saying someone already offers a product like this, or that it's been considered before?
A:
From http://www.eliseusa.com.
Lotus offered it some time ago - of course, they called it the Motorsport Elise.

Well the Eliseusa guys have worked on one, and similar mods. I have a set of their alloy letters on my car. Maybe try reaching out for them for the latest should you have interest.
A:
That would just be an Exige conversion kit, right? I'm sure that I've seen a few of those at various British suppliers, though they could have been for the S1.
A:
That would just be an Exige conversion kit, right? Not exactly. I want to design an "Elise Coupe" conversion - something that's similar to, but not an exact copy of, the Exige coupe design. I'm gonna do a couple more iterations of the design.
A:
Here's one with a solid hatch. I'm gonna do one with some louvres next.

Do it out of dark lexan with louvers and you've got yourself an S1 Exige "motorsport cover."

I remember a post from a few years ago about a place in Japan that sells kits to convert the rear of an Elise to an Exige. There was a site called pinkelise or something like that from out of Japan with a lot of interesting mods.
Steve: Can you make two separate rear windows so it will look like a 64 split window Corvette?
