Scary moment on the track/ footrest fell of

Interior Exterior

Q:
My (left) foot rest fell of today on the track... and bounced all over the place inbetween gass and break pedal until I could stop safely! Nice scare
Looks like it was just glued on with black silicone.
I am considering riveting it on. Has anybody done that?
I am concerned what might be behind the aluminum side wall in the foot well.... I need to check what is behind it before I start drilling. does anybody know?
Don't the oil lines run along the side?
A:
Matt, you might want to pull the front wheel and wheel liner to get an idea of what's there. Riveting would make a lot of sense.
A:
Remove all loose objects from the interior of the car before going through tech.
The dead Pedal is only glued?????? What a POS! I was about to remove it an find a wider DP as this one gives me foot cramps. How about a backing plate and bolts! Is there room?
A:
Glue is light.

Hell, the whole car is glued! What a POS!
Matt, you can probably lay off the leg presses now. You're done.
A:
Done right and the bond should be amazingly strong, something went wrong here. I wouldn't hesitate to clean everything up nicely and reglue it with OE glue if that is a room temp glue. The red chassis glue is oven cured @ a few hundred degrees BTW. Obviously the black glue is not red..this may mean they add the dead pedal later on, perhaps when they know if the frame will be LHD or RHD.
If you want more complete peace of mind for whatever reason, leave the thing off. Or make an extension or new dead pedal that extends forward to the end of the footwell, to brace against another surface.
It was quite dangerous to have that thing loose down there, what if a kid ran into the street and you could not stop because the dead pedal was blocking the brake pedal?
Some larger guys have deliberately removed their dead pedal such as Chococar.
A:
Glue - now that is scary, man.
A:
Yes, I know the whole car is glued. But not with that stuff.
A dead pedal can receive quite a bit of force when used properly.
If it's so strong why don't they glue on the brake pedal? Or do they???

I think this is what they use for the dead pedal. It's the space debris that gives it the necessary strength. Did I mention that it's gravity-proof?

A good argument for harnesses. Then you won't need to brace yourself using the dead pedal.
Of course, to do harnesses, we really need a proper (slotted) seat.

A:
Nice save. I know that had to be a scary situation.
A:
Matt,
You're so lucky to have it fall off! I had to work like crazy to remove mine.
It's held in place with betaseal, which is used to hold windshields in place.

Speaking of which, I've seen a few cases where people here have slotted the seatbacks. Has anybody sucessfully (safely) slotted the seat bottom? I'm not real thrilled about the aftermarket seat options that I'm aware of. I really like the stock seats. I must be who they were designed for.

Mike This happened on the track with 4 point Harness and slotted seats.
I'll be pulling the wheel liner and see if it can be savely riveted.
And yes I miss the dead pedal.
BTW This is not windshield silicone type stuff.
It seems to be the glue that is used to glue the glass fiber parts to the chassis.
I have some high strength silicon based marine glue that I'll be using and then a couple aluminum rivets....

My dead pedal fell off the first day I had the car. Not being tall I found it very uncomfortable having my left foot "hanging in the breeze" with nothing to brace myself. The betaseal was still adhered to the chassis, but the dead pedal was clean as could be. They probably either forgot to prep my pedal or it got contaminated.
Mine was repaired by HRM. They riveted the dead pedal on, and I as informed this is the official Lotus repair for this problem. I doubt we are the only two.

Got 5 points. A seat with some side support would go a long way to relieving pressure on the dead pedal.
Winter project.
A:
LOL! That glue's for LB cars only.
A:
Man, I can sympathize. During the drive after the toys 4' tots show, I had an empty water bottle fly from the hole above the outlet between the seats directly into the footwell. Scared the holy $&@^ out of me as it went right between the brake and accelerator peddles, and of course it happened right as I was breaking for a sharp turn. Lesson to me, keep interior clear of objects like that!
A:
Matt,
Your adhesive is black, right? Lotus told me it was Betaseal, windshield stuff, when I was seeking their advice on removing mine.
Joe

I removed my dead pedal as well and it was hell to get that f**er out of there! maybe they changed something on the new cars dead pedal attachment?
