Damn Deer......

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
Going to be interesting to see how much that damage tallies up to. Glad you are not hurt. Now, it's time fo the gratuitous snapshot of a deer/horse sticking out of a windshield.

I am taking it in tomorrow I will let you know what it's going to cost. I figure at least 5k and I also broke a wheel.

If you were to have hit the deer straight on it may have gone up and over the car, this is what happened to us when we hit a Laborador dog. Granted the dog was maybe 70lbs, it went up and landed behind us, we were doing about 40mph. Similar damage to the front.

How much did it cost you to repair the front end.
A:
this suck but if you haven't called your ins. guy yet read this first!most insurance companies will hose you on this because you missed the deer! so now it will count on your record as a collision and not as a comp claim. stick some deer hair in the grill!! because they will say "well you were going to fast and simply drove off the road. you didn't swerve to miss a deer"

I hate deer, have rolled one over my hood when he stepped out in front of me on the interstate. I saw him when I hit him....

Living in the Northwoods and working in a hospital, we see this constantly. You are usually better off hitting the deer rather than steering sharply to avoid them. The deer do a lot less damage than trees or cars in the other lane. I've only hit one. Hit it with the Hummer H1 about ten years ago, saw it about a quarter of a mile ahead on a bank above the shoulder of the opposite lane. Had a bad feeling about it and slowed to about 45 mph when it decided to cross directly in front of me. Hit it with the center of the tire (leading edge of the vehicle on an H1.) It flew OVER The ROOF. Total damage to Hummer...$0.00 Mabe there are a few reasons to own H1's (See thread on loving vs hating Hummers.) Indidentally, those "deer Whistles" are absolutely worthless. A friend had them on his SUV and managed to hit at least one deer a year for as long as I knew him. He was an avid hunter and it was acknowledged at our deer camp that his favorite deer rifle was a Chevy Suburban...Dave

I had to dodge two animals coming home last night. Rounded a bend and there was a racoon in the middle of my lane; no oncoming traffic so I swerved over and missed him. I don't go more than 200 yds. and am still exhaling in relief when I see a big dog in my lane just standing there! Once again, no oncoming traffic so go around him too. I was like, "WTF are the odds?!?" Went very slow the rest of the way just in case there was a deer waiting for me too. Yes, very enjoyable drive home on the animal slalom course.

I took the car in this morning and the shop won't put a number to it until they put it on a lift and take the front and back ends off.
A:
DEER HAIR IS your friend!

I'd be careful about this as it is insurance fraud. But I echo your warning. When I hit a deer with my M3, my insurance person said I was lucky I hit it because it falls under the classification of "comprehensive". If I had swerved and hit something, it would count as my fault.

The first (and only, so far) time I hit a deer it was standing in the opposite lane, facing the far side of the road. It looked right at me, started to walk off the road, then just as I got there it turned around and leaped in front of me. Those things can turn around and take off incredibly fast! Since then I expect a suicide attack from every wild animal.

Bambi ran out in front of my nearly new Elise a month ago- was nearly stopped when it hit the corner of the windshield on the passenger side, rotated around and took off the mirror and cracked the door right above the door handle. Those stupid animals can ran at full speed through the woods hitting nothing (reminds me of an old Far Side cartoon but that's another story) but decide to literally RUN into the side of a car! Should get the car back this week- waiting for the body shop's glass expert to put in the new windshield...
Had another deer actually run into the side of my Audi A4 after I had stopped because I saw him coming- he left some hair in the door handle and window frame but luckily did no other obvious damage to the Audi... we live a rural setting and there are way too many of those damned things!!!!

And yes, Bambi was killed- probably broke it's neck. If it hadn't died I think I would have killed it!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune ... I killed a Possum in my Lotus a few weeks ago. Thought I'd be able to clear the little critter, but even when he crouched down I still smacked him down right in the center of the license mount on the clam. I felt bad until I got home and my wife told me that Possums are stupid vermin without the sense to avoid cars.

Ouch. Is the insurance gonna cover it? Or write the car off?
