Not only that, but he brought the car in for an engine swap, and left his library in the footwell. Does all that stuff stay in place in high-G curves? Sorry for getting off topic. The Audi plant looks AWESOME!

Burt,

Have you considered going with the Quattro drivetrain? An Elise with AWD would just be GODLY off the line!!!

Yeah, we call it "not available." Along with a lot of other neat little cars. Damn US regs.
A:
update!!!

Lovely car... really nice.

That engine was sweet in the Cupra, but must be a monster in the Lotus.

Would the DSG gearbox fit in this kind of conversion? Would that even be feasible, with the electronics etc? Of course rowing your own gears is a big part of the pleasure, but after a short drive in a friend's supercharged Exige Cup (265hp), I couldn't help thinking what an absolute kick it would be to have the lightning fast shifts and the seamless power delivery of the DSG. I would give up some of the driver involvement of a conventional 'box, in order to never drop off the boost and to be able to concentrate more on braking, corner lines etc.

SWEET Burt,

BTW> Regards to Julie, tell her zevzdah chris says HI!
A:
What can I say!!!! – Cant really put it into words really – you really have to drive a Bernard car to appreciate the sheer grunt this thing has!!
So, I’ll do this in itemized bits

1 INSTALLATION:

Although in previous piccies I have posted some people think its “crammed in” and “ugly” BUT….when you see it in the flesh it actually looks as though this Audi lump was made for the S2!! It really is neat and tidy…in a ...."snug bug in a rug" sort of way

One small set back is that on the S2 the water reservoir has to move to under the left cover panel on the front clam…which means every time it runs out you have to remove a load of screws to fill it up again!! An issue not even worth worrying about really (just thought I’d mention it)

Bernard removed the plastic fins in front of the nearside rear wheel to improve airflow into the engine bay….so now I am on the look out for a cheap scoop!!

2. BOOT SPACE: (one for Andy)
you loose 15mm MAX – on S2 bulkhead has to be modified to take the heat shield – but again its not noticeable!....still managed to get in: 2 crash helmets / warning triangle / large holdall / soft top / removed plastic fins and various other bits of crap!!

3. DRIVING IT

start it up….(using no throttle)…and it comes to life, well, in a way that a cat starts purring, it sorta just sits behind you gently throbbing away, you’d think you had just a bog standard K behind you that had gone to sleep!.
Blip the throttle…..nothing that implies…HEY I AM AUDI…LETS KICK ARSE!!....just a low toned purr……..

Next thing I found out……Reverse IS DIFFERENT!!! - K series reverse is where Audi 6th is finding reverse can be a bit tricky….as it needs a bit of tempting to get in!! – This may loosen up over time
So get it into reverse and start lifting the clutch to find the bite point…now remember for the last 3 and a half weeks I have been driving a fiesta!!
The bite point is surprisingly low!! Just lift yer left foot up about 30 mm and its there!! So its gonna be a learning curve for burty!! This coupled with a short-shift “should” be fun

Drive out of Bernard’s road, and find a nice stretch out dual carriage way….taking it VERY steady to start…really didn’t want to totally it due to heavy right foot antics..so proceeded with up most caution around the round-a-bout…..this is where I realized that fist gear is actually quite short – same sort of gearing as my old crappy long GB attached to the VVC K!!!...
Get off the round-a-bout (it had warmed up by now as Bernard had been “playing with it” in the morning) in second…..everythings clear ahead…

FLOOR IT!!

WWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHOOOOOOOOO

JESUS HOLY MARY MOTHER OF [Censored] ING GOD….2nd……3RD……..4TH…..(NOW DOING 100+)………..5TH…….BACK OFF NOW……6…….

And BREATHE!!!

(sorry for the blasphemous remark but that’s the only euphemism I could come up with!)

Believe me, if you have ever paxed in an Audi’d car, and think…”.WOW”…drive one…nothing can prepare you for the sheer acceleration when you floor it (or even “blip” it) from low down revs it is a COMPLETELY different sensation driving one to paxing in one!! – no turbo lag WHATSOEVER…with the turbo hiss and the pinning to the seat sensation…..it is unbeatable!!

I have driven about 200 miles in it so far…..you can pootle about in 6th all day without the engine struggling or complaining about it!!...and while you are doing that , at times, you tend to forget about what this beast can do….even from about 40 mph in 6th lol

The noise from the Turbo is just awesome….blip the throttle and it sounds like a nuclear powered vacuum cleaner…..

One thing I have noticed is that the cabin gets BL**DY hot!...now this maybe due to the fact my heater is nackered (relays blown) and it comes on whenever it feels like it and starts to roast the occupants, or it may be what’s going on behind you…but I thing its more likely been the former NOT the later…Julie had a search around the cockpit and it DEFO seemed as though it was coming from the vents) either way I can always open the windows, or take the roof off!! – or it could be because I’ve been driving around with AC for the last 3 weeks!!

tiTTystorm is now EVERYTHING I ever wanted it to be…..

A 280 (ISH) BHP TORQUE ANIMAL!!!

Please feel free to take the pi$$ - as I know you probo will…but I really don’t GAF…

And I am not going to get into “discussion” about other engine conversions….the Audi does what I WANTED!! …………………………..AND MORE

If you are at a track and see either me or Julie please feel free to ask for a pax!!

One happy bunny!!

BERNARD
A:
Congrats on a happy conversion! And thanks for the pics and thorough review!

Quick question, and I know you might answer it a touch differently once you've tracked the car: What are your impressions of the handling, what with the extra 88 lbs and all?
A:
added 88lbs will be still lighter than a 111R lol
