A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Sure. My dad had a Lancia two Lancia Scorpions. One he pulled from a wrecking yard and completely restored the car himself (the car would win prizes at car shows) and later a Fiat 124 Spider.
He would frequently phone me about his exploits about racing Porsches (his favorite targets, er...victims) on back roads. Soundly beating and embarassing the poor suckers. All this at age 85!
When he was 87, I would lend him my Ferrari F335B for a week or so. I can only imagine the havoc he caused.

Would anyone have guessed that fewer than half of our parents owned sports cars while we were growing up? Perhaps this is something of a nature vs. nurture argument. Some seem to have been turned on to sports cars through others. Some of us just seemed to be passionate about cars all on our own, often from very early ages. Haven't we all known one-year olds who already love cars, trucks, trains, motorcycles, or airplanes? And for some of us, it never went away.

My mother has never driven a car. My father got his license when he was in his fifties (after learning to fly a plane in WWII maybe ground transportation never appealed?)

I voted no although my dad had sports cars when he was younger, just before he got married and had kids. I suppose the question is a little ambiguous.

LOL, my dad did for the most part as well. He currently owns two Camrys and one C5 corvette, so it looks like Consumer Reports got two of his picks.

Yup - Dad had a couple of Sunbeam Alpines. Not the swiftest or sportiest of the bunch (I always suspected he bought them more as chick magnets, or because they were thrifty on gas...), but I thought they were pretty cool. That's what I learned to drive on. His first was an early 60's black one with the bigger tail fins (not sure what year they switched over), but the second one was a far more cool red one... Maybe that's where my red w/black interior fixation comes from?
Anyway it look like this one:

My dad had a C3 Vette, a Porsche 944, a mid-80s Mercedes SL, and a few other sporty cars when I was growing up.
A:
Nope. Both parents grew up in the 20's/30's and felt lucky to even have a car. About the coolest cars we had were two used 1957 Chevys, one a 210, the other a Bel Air, both the same mint-green color. This was an necessary evil, as Dad taught at Georgia Tech at the time and we lived out in the suburbs in Decatur. Mom needed a car, so thus the two '57's. When we moved to Carbondale, Ill. after he accepted a job at SIU, he sold them both and bought a new '62 Fairlane. I begged Dad to trade it for a Mustang when they first came out, but he wouldn't think of it: "They've got bucket seats!" He made it sound like we were trading Mom for a live-in belly dancer. I was consumed by thoughts of Mustangs, E-types, and other neat cars of the '60's, but there would be none of that. I think that this deprivation is the root of my sports car obsession. After 240z, a few 911's, the Elan, and others, I'm still not cured. The folks are both 83 now and still can't understand my wanting an Elise or anything else not recommended by leading consumer magazines.

I'm kinda torn on this question, because I know before I was born my father had a few English sports cars (I've never really asked him which ones, he always talked about how people tended to screw up the electronics because the positive and negative were switched on some of them)... but while I was growing up he never had any. But he was fully behind me buying my own English sports car.
A:
My dad always bought cheap cars that he didn't have to make payments on. I think I was adopted. I think I'll always be in debt with a sports car. I don't have the cash to actually pay for a car. My dad did, but didn't/doesn't have the interest.
A:
No way in hell.
A:
My Dad had a 6? Triumph spitfire before he met my Mom. It lasted until a few months after I was born and the switch to practical cars was made.
I rebelled and bought the Elise a few months after our son was born.
A:
Step-dad: Datsun 280 Z the year I turned 15. I *never* got to drive any of his Z's.
Dad: Yamaha RD 350 that he later gave to me and my brothers. I've had a bike endorsement since just before my 17th birthday.

.. or that one?

A 1960 TR3 that became mine after droping my 175 Honda in some corners, no hiding the scratched-up fuel tank, sold the TR3 for a 914-6 sold the Porsche to pay for the Elise

My father had an old race-prepped Mini. The engine was bored, stroked, nitrated, and blueprinted. I remember seeing a picture of it, and it had an exterior oil cooler mounted to the front bumper. A set of plugs lasted about 200 miles. My mother made him get rid of it (big shocker there.) He used to talk about it all the time, and ended up buying a new Mini a couple of years ago. My mother hates the new one just as much.
A:
No,
My parents could care less about cars, for example my Dad drives around in a Chevy Celebrity. He actually had two of them at the same time.
It's strange they gave birth to such a car nut.
A:
Yep. My dad had the following while we (3 kids) were growing up:
1974 SAAB Sonnett III
1981 Datsun 280ZX Turbo
1985 Nissan 300ZX Turbo
1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa (I was 6' tall and had to sit in back!)
1993 Mazda RX7
Then he went to 7-series BMWs. Gee, I wonder where I get my penchant for impractical cars.
