A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Alrite, so all you people with car covers, what do you do when its really windy? Currently theres constant wind at 10-20mph with gusts going up to 40mph. How do you keep the cover on?
I was thinking of maybe punching a hole in the back of the cover (around where the exhaust exits) and then using shoe laces to ties that part to the wheels.
Any other suggestions?

Most car covers come with loops sewn (or a grommet hole) into the sides at the bottom of the door. You can attach a cord (or a steel cable - vinyl coated hopefully) to the loop on one side. Toss the other end under the car to the other side and tie it (or lock it if it's the steel cable) to the loop on the other side.
On my old cover for my Elan, I used an old rubber ball - I punched holes in it for the cord to pass through. I could use this to easily toss the cord to the other side. I then used a "slip loop" to tie it to the loop on the car cover.

You could always do this.

Yeah...like last night Jedi. Wow! It was hurricane level in the east east bay. You would easily suffer a car cover casualty in that.

I use a 1/2" delrin rod that passes through the grommets at the bottom of the car cover. It's threaded 1/2-13 on both ends, and brass wing nuts screw onto it. So far the cover has been fine in winds gusting to 50mph, maybe more. I made the rod the right length so that it pulls the cover together a bit as the wing nuts are tightened.

I just used the OE cover and the strap and buckle that it came with. It held through 40+ winds when one of the remanents of a hurricane came up the east coast.
so apparently the stock cover does hold okay.

I know about the cable and have one. The problem is thats the only part that will stay on the car. The front and rear both blow up and pretty much I just have a nice green and yellow flag attached to the elise.
Two nights ago the cover wouldn't stay on for more then a minute. The main problem is that the wind would get under the cover in the rear and once that came up everything else just came up. If the rear of the cover wrapped under the car like the front does, I think it'd do fine. (Weathercraft cover from Sector 111).

I suppose if it's a continuing problem with your local weather (or the cover design) you could add some hooks/loops to the cover so that cords can be run behind the wheels. Something like this:

Stock cover is awesome.. holds in very high winds and keeps it dry
