A&Q about Lotus
Q:
So, I didn't get a speeding ticket...guess it really was my lucky day. I was running late for a meeting and got pulled for 79 in a 65. I also got hit for not having a North Carolina license...I have a VA one; I have been living in NC with my girlfriend for a year. The officer actually let me off of the speeding charge...at first he said he was going to ticket me for both then told me that "you have enough going on son"--what ever that means (I consider myself very lucky that day)... I did tell he I was running late and I was in the process of buying a house this month.
Ok...sorry to bore you with all the details. My question is, is it reasonable to get my NC license and go to my court date to see if I can get the violation dropped? The reason I had not already gotten it was because I had no proof that I was living in NC (ie utility bills or lease) I was waiting until I purchased my home this month to get everything changed. So, should I try to fight it or just pay it and move on...still getting my NC license within the month either way.
Thanks for your help

There seem to be a few details missing. Were you running NC plates on a car registered in your name? Obviously, the officer would know when you registered the car if that is the case.
Pay the fine.

I was driving my Gf's car, which had NC plates. oh well, guess I'll just pay the fine.

I still don't follow. I spend some time in NC but can't fathom how it's illegal to have an out of state license when driving another person's NC car (provided you have its registration and insurance). It shouldn't matter where you're from as long as you're licensed, insured, etc.

The officer probably asked him if he lived in NC and he answered honestly.

BINGO! I was too worried about the speeding ticket to even think about the other

I certainly wouldn't go to court. You got the big one dropped already. The officer would probably feel a bit offended and make things worse for you.
Pay the fine and move on.

I hear ya...but actually, the officer is the one who told me to get the NC license and go to court. I've looked into this violation and it appears to carry three points...I was surprised to see that.
A:
Points for that? Points should punish acts that endanger people's safety! Its not like you didn't have a license at all.
Isn't this the state that kept sending Jesse Helms to the Senate??
A:
I can't believe he ticketed you for an out of state license, when you were speeding and didn't ticket you for speeding. Those NC guys, a tough bunch!
But if you go to court and lose you have to pay court costs don't you?

Get your new license and everything else fixed and bring it with you, and explain the circumstances regarding having still been in the process of making your residence permanent to the judge. There's a good chance he'll let you off. Good luck,
John
