I haven't been paying attention to it. HD Gran Turismo would be nice while the Elise is hibernating for the winter. GT 5 is supposed to be released Spring 2007.

Ok, so I couldn't take it anymore. I had to play around. Some people photoshop, I do audio.

So i took that clip and added sound to it using only the audio from the top speed pro audio clips.

So listen to the original, then look/listen to this little clip of it I did. Now I didn't spend a lot of time so it's not perfect, but this is really how the engines should sound on this game.

Absolutely Genius, if the game sounded like that, it would be unbelievable. Good work skottoman

Since the PS3 uses Blueray and there is mp3 compression there is no reason they can't have tonnes of sound clips for each cars engine sounds. Look at games like TOCA2006 or GTR2 on the PC their engines sound pretty amazing. Proof it can be done and with all the success of the GT series over the years they cant say they dont have the budget!

Wow what a difference! Very nice. I guess 1.7 billion wasnt enough to get that in the game

Yes, compared to the original sound, this is much better. But knowing how sound works, and especially for dynamic content such as games, it would really be hard to make the clips work in every situation. Thus engine sounds are normally synthesized.
But I do believe it could be done. Amazing amounts of mapping, eq, various recordings etc.

The actual game play sound would be easier because the POV is the same while racing, but to get that sound in the replay would be much harder dynamically. Still, I think there is a way to figure it out.

I know that the Racer Free Car Simulator uses an audio clip of the car recorded at a set RPM level, and then loops it, changing the pitch for varying RPMs. You can also have multiple sounds for differing engine characteristics at differing RPMs. And, sounds for off-throttle vs. on-throttle, too.

A lot of sound related issues is due to what the programmers allow the sound team to work with. In the case of GT, they are really pushing the graphics, so they allocate most of the processor/memory resources to graphics, leaving very little for the audio. Hopefully, with GT5, they'll give the sound guys more to work with.

I watched a making-of video once (for GT3 maybe) and they showed engineers with sound equipment around various real cars recording engine noise, exhaust etc. Yes they were measuring specific cars, but I'm not sure how much they extrapolated those recordings to other vehicles. I wonder if its their implementation that's isn't any good, likely from making static measurements sound dynamic.

Well that and the oligatory whiny trans noise when you upgrade your trans, blow-off noise when you turbo, etc.

Agree on the sound. I especially enjoyed the crackles and pops! Music and sound for me is 50% of the game (of crouse no in-game music at all for racing games, that's just wrong )
