A&Q about Lotus
Q:
I know some people are wondering what kind of break in procedure people used to keep the warranty in place and get the best performance from the engine, so I thought I would share my data dump info and maybe others can use this thread to do the same.
Max Vehicle speeds
1. 147 kph- approx 91 mph
2. 146 kph
3. 144 kph
4. 141 kph
5. 140 kph
Total engine running life
34h 13m 52s
Throttle postion (only listing the higher rev postions)
35-50%- 17m 53s
50-65%- 5m 52 s
65-80%- 2M 20S
80-100%- 3m 40s
Engine Speeds
5500-6500 rpm- 18m 58s
6500-7000- 3m 12s
7000- 7500- 1m 44s
Max engine speeds
1. 8593 temp 85.63C reached at engine hour 29h 42m
2. 8499 temp 81.25C 33h 7m
3. 8476 temp 81.25C 18h 56m
4. 8453 temp 84.38C 32h 9m
5. 8378 temp 85.63C 25h 29
Standing starts- 0 (Tech mentioned that this was the main thing that they look for to deny powertrain coverage BTW) He guessed that dropping the clutch above 3500 rpm defined a standing start, but he was'nt sure.
I hope to provide a dyno run soon to see what type of power the motor is producing.

Cool. I'm getting my car serviced at the moment and requested for a print out of the data dump. I'll post my results later.
Results:
Throttle Position:
1.5% - 15%
18 hours.
15% - 25%
2 hours.
Engine Speed:
2500 rpm - 3500 rpm
11 hours.
3500 rpm - 4500 rpm
6 hours.
Wheel Speed:
90 kph - 120 kph
10 hours.
Max Engine Revs:
8100 RPM
That's the main break down. There's a bunch more but they're not that significant. I'm assuming they rev the engine pretty high before delivery (at the factory?) 'Cause I don't remember ever stepping past 6.5K
I was fairly gentle during the break in, I'd say.

I haven't seen a precise definition of "Standing Start" yet. Does anyone know the ECU conditions required to bump the count? I think I scored "1", and I don't recall doing any "peel out" launches.
A:
well, the clowns who did my 1400 mile service would not give me the printout. gave me some lame line of **** about not being able to print it. you know, given the rep these guys had BEFORE buying really made me feel a lot more comfy in the purchase. now i wonder whether they will be a worthwhile service dept over the long haul. my first experience with them was less than satisfying. multiple lies. "we don't have the tool required to adjust the headlights", " cannot print out the data dump", "did not have time to look at the alignment"
i sure hope they have had a chance to get that super high end specialized headlight adjustment tool in the interim. morons or just liars? still undecided
A:
Ugh! I didnt know that they could tell how you have been driving it..... No burn outs here....but lots of agressive driving. Been over 120MPH once, over 100MPH a few times. Only saw the shift light a few times. Im due for my 1000 mile check up in a few weeks. Hope there not a lecture involved

Maybe you saw some wheelspin during a takeoff in a parking lots at low speeds. When driving in slippery conditions such as a sandy surface, snow, rain, etc. It depends on what their definitions are for this sort of thing.

Dude.. in present company, that's considered babying it. You'll have to try harder before you can wear size "A" Agressive.
As far as I know, nobody in all of EliseTalk has actually gotten a talking-to from their ECU download. And there are a few motorman fans here...

what happens if you "accidently" reset the ecu before the service , not that i need to or anything

If you are equipped to reset the ECU, then you can just read your own log, print it out for your scrapbook, clear it, and be done.
If you're thinking a fuse pull or battery disconnect will wipe the memory, you're in for a surprise.

Well, won't do a thing. It's a "flash" memory. That's not a "volatile" memory. (A volatile memory requires continuous power to keep the data recorded. A flash memory is like the chip in a digital camera. Keeps the data independent of power to the chip.)
So, you may "reset" but it won't wipe the data -- and might make Lotus a little suspicious of your motives, even if you're innocent.

Does anyone know if the checkup data comes from the OBDII or the CAN bus?
Thanks,
Jay
A:
err yeah, bob, but i did indeed mean wiping the NVRAM as well or at least resetting it, all we would (theorectically of course) is dump the data, force a condition, re-read and it see whats changed, and then just mod those fields, that way no suspicions ! it'd be nice to see about field diagnostics and performance data as well, which is really where my interest lies, i was kidding about the reset.
its just idle curiosity , i haven't even gotten into 6th gear yet
plus my dealership is active on this forum so they know what i'd be upto, hi abraham !
A:
my tech said a standing start is a 5k dump and staying over 5k in the first 3 gears.

CANbus. The OBD-II is standard ODB-II...
A:
it looks like the data maybe password protected, as well as it being a federal offence to change it, from what lotus engineers says anyway
however if you want to build a device for it, you can crack the code (if one exists ) and not get caught up in the DMCA.

Well, then it must have happened in the 13 miles before I took delivery.
Seriously, I never did anything close to a 5k dump. I'm going to hope it was part of "factory test".

Had MY first checkup today. Also had some "work" done on the car. Total cost at Valenti: $356.81. Ouch! In addition to the 1000 mile service, had the following:
Missing 3rd key.
Found under seat.
Missing standard rocker panel film, included with car before starshield?
Supplied customer with new pieces.
Battery doesn't always start.
Need to hook up trickle charger. (Not thrilled about that one.)
Rear pass side diffuser bent.
Straightened.
Washers shoot over windshield.
Adjusted.
Head lights too low.
Adjusted.
And the important parts of the printout; left out seconds:
THROTTLE POSITION:
1 - 1.5%
16' 52"
1.5 - 15%
1' 42"
(Under 5 minutes for the rest of the positions)
ENGINE SPEED
500 - 1500 RPM
13' 43"
1500-2500 RPM
10' 37"
2500 - 3500 RPM
12' 19"
3500 - 4500 RPM
4' 5"
Total time over 4500 RPM was 11 seconds
WHEEL SPEED
Mostly under 120 KMH, just about a half hour over that.
MAP, COOLANT TEMP & OIL TEMP
All "zeros"
MAX ENGINE SPEEDS
MAX RPM 1
6923
MAX RPM 2
6630
and so on.
MAX ENGINE SPEEDS
MAX KMH 1
181
MAX KMH 2
163
MAX KMH 3
157
MAX KMH 4
155
MAX KMH 5
149
FASTEST 0-100 KMH
25.5 s
FASTEST 0-160 KMH
25.5 s
TOTAL ENGINE RUNNING LIFE
40' 52"
NUMBER OF STANDING STARTS
0
I guess this boils down to "it passed", highest speed so far was about 113 MPH. Best I could do on the public highways! 50 MH over speed limit is pushing it. But I didn't abuse the car. I'm sure this qualifies as total babying.
A:
Heidi,
When I went for my service, they didn't offer me the 10% discount, nor the paint warranty. Hell I didn't even get the print out. Now I'm getting Jelous!

- You're supposed to have
a small 'emergency' key that is quite small....only being metal ....that I keep
tucked away in my wallet.
