A&Q about Lotus

Q:
I got my Elise at 6 PM tonight! It actually arrived on December 29th, but I couln't pick it up until now. Sorry, I don't have any pictures yet. It is a little dark outside at the moment.

Lotus Racing Green, Sport Package, Touring Package (Biscuit Leather), and a hard top.

I already took off the hardtop and those annoying sun visors. So far I have driven about 40 miles and a cop already stopped me. The cop just wanted to have a closer look. He said what type of car is that? Does it have a V12 engine?

Let the fun begin ... !

I had to pick up my old car at the dealership this morning, so I couldn't meet everyone at the Arboretum.

I did go for a drive though. I drove west on 71 and took the reverse route hoping to cross paths on the way.

I was doing fine until just after Dripping Springs and then I had an encounter with a suicidal deer. The deer was headed straight for the side of my car, it took out my diver's side mirror and went over the top of the car across the cockpit. The only part of the door that was damaged was the mounting point for the mirror and it was shattered. There are some hoof skid marks on my windshield, but no damage. I got a minor scratch on my head from another hoof. I thought my car was destroyed, but to my amazement it was just the mirror and mounting point.

I feel lucky, but a bit depressed.

Wow! That's an amazing account. I'm so sorry to hear about the damage! Glad you're ok. We actually saw you drive by going North just outside of Dripping Springs about about 2PM or 3 PM. We deviated from the original route just a bit. We were parked at the elementary school taking pictures when we saw you drive by. We tried to wave you down.

Coincidentally while we were at the school taking pics, we talked about deer and how they may leap over the Elise!

BTW I recieved a message from Neil about calling you (I assume he was talking about you) for the drive but I didn't check my messages till after the drive. Sorry.
A:
This really sucks ... The door, mirror, and window need to be replaced.
A:
time estimate? pics?
A:
The cost will be approximately $2000 in parts, plus paint and labor. I haven't got the final quote yet so the price my change. All of the parts are warehoused in the USA, so I expect that it will be two to four weeks.

Autostrada (Neil) will take some digital photos for insurance purposes. I will share when I get copies.

Neil and Andrew have been great. (If either of you happen to read this, thanks for providing great service and for being true Lotus enthusiasts.)
A:
Ouch,

Glad you are in good hands.
A:
Now that's a bit of bad luck! I hope the rest of 2005 brings enough driving goodness to make up for the false start.
A:
what an amazing story. I feel bad about the damage and am glad you're not hurt. But I can't help to laugh at the oddity of the whole episode. What the hell does a deer have against an Elise?
A:
wow!
what a story! i can only imagine that split second "OMG!" feeling you had seeing the impending impact.

he Elsie is small enough for deer to jump over... how cool

One of my teamates got hit by a deer when it treid to jump over him while cycling (my teamate, not the deer cycling) it messed him up, the hoof hit his elbow and he had to have 2 surguries to put it back together. Glad to hear you came out pretty good!!

I had 3 OMG moments ... One when the deer bounded into the middle of the opposite side of the road, one when it was about two feet away (the dear had a bug eye OMG look), and one when it was going over the top of the car after coliding with my mirror and door.

The worst moment is when the deer bounded onto the road and I had a split second to decide gas or brakes. I was in too high of a gear to go for the gas, so I picked brakes. I think it was the right choice, but I will never know.

Thankfully it was the deer that hit my car and not the me that hit the deer.

I think the deer was speeding though!
A:
Thanks for the thoughts TTP, Randy, clrodrick, shay2nak, and fitfan. I am having serious Elise withdrawal symptoms ... I need a fix.

Any idea when you will get your car back?

The current estimate is three weeks ... Once the insurance company (Farmers) signs off.

I was worried about where they would let me have the repairs done, but apparently the Farmers insurance adjuster and the recommended body shop have worked together a decent number of times in the past.

The car will be moved to the body shop on Wednesday. The adjuster will inspect the car on Thursday. And, I expect the parts to be ordered sometime between this coming Friday and the first part of next week.

Barring any unforeseen delays in receiving the parts, I expect to have the car back by the end of January ... Possibly the first week of February.
