steering wheel adapter

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
ryoung99 -

You're saying that the 30mm adapter required four CAP HEAD M6x30???

That is what YvoTuk told me, but just from looking at the adapter, it appears that the four hole are countersunk. Know what I mean? They have an angled surface for the bolt head to bear on. It seems this condition would require FLAT HEAD (which have the angled bearing surface normally required to mate with countersunk holes).

Can you address this concern specifically?

Neil I hate it when you do this! How long's the wait?

I am looking into upgrading the steering wheel very soon. The snap-off feature is welcome... However, I have a question regarding the 30mm spacer. My ancillary goal to installing this steering wheel is gain some more knee room underneath it (as I am 6'3" tall). My questions to people who have installed it:
1) Is there any more knee room with the 30mm adapter compared to stock?
2) Should I go with a spacer that is more than 30mm?
3) Should I even bother installing the steering wheel and procure the spacer only? Are stock-steering wheel compatibel spacers available?

Thanks and cheers,

I havn't actually installed my kit yet, but it appears that it will create more knee room as follows:

1. The 30mm spacer relocates the steering wheel about 15mm closer to the driver. The relocation is, of course, towards your chest and slightly up.

2. The 300mm diameter wheel provided in the kit appears to be about 10mm smaller radius than the factory supplied wheel.

The spacer will move the wheel closer to you. I measured my stock wheel at 300MM, so I don't believe there's a difference in size - with the kit mentioned. I know of no spacer for the stock wheel. A though would be to go with a 280MM or flat-bottom wheel.

PS, I thought the stock wheel was too close already and really like the position it's in now with a 23MM spacer and no snap-off..... it's more like an Italian car

Not for me although I cannot say it is too far. It is in the comfort zone. But it is sort of an act of desperation I need more knee room and the steering wheel together with a lowered seat should do the job.

Something like the 280MM wheel in this picture would give lots more room.

XTN,
My 30mm adaptor had four holes that were milled so that the entire cap of the M6 would drop in, leaving it flush with the surface of the adaptor.

The quick disconect plate (that has the wires for the horn attached) which bolts to the adaptor, has four holes that are countersunk, that require a different bolt.

Fortunately I race european karts thus I might have the largest selction of M6 hex head bolts on the face of the earth. Honestly I cannot even tell you where I used the bolts provided and where I just grabbed bolts out of my collection.

Now I did use a liberal amount of loctite on the ends, let it cure and then tried to undo the bolts, no chance of them coming loose.

Hope that helps.

Rick

btw. If someone has the 20mm adaptor and would like a 30, I will trade with you.

One more thing, it is so much easier to get out of the car without the wheel attached. I am amazed and the difference it makes. Then the wheel gets put in the boot for storage and theft deterance.

One step at a time, this little Exige is going to become a race car before my wifes eyes (and before she realizes it).

Thanks for the description. I don't have the adapter in front of me at this moment, but I could have sworn the holes were milled down AND countersunk. I'll check when I get home.

My car is doing the same dance with the wife. A couple of weeks ago she said "Hey you ought to get one of those some day" referring to an aftermarket exhaust because she heard a couple of other cars that have it. Later that week a package showed up on my doorstep. She was a bit bothered that it was an exhaust for the car. "But Darling, you TOLD me to get one!"
