A&Q about Lotus
Q:
I know we've talked about it before, but has anyone found a locking gas cap for the Elise? Someone mentioned a Ford F150 cap once, but has anyone tested any other manufacturer? I'd really like to put a lock on my fuel system sense I park in a public garage.

They're not gonna get much gas out of an Elise. I bet the cap would cost you more than a whole tank of gas anyway.

Great comment. My Elise had a locking cap. If it wasn't screwed on very tight, the engine light would come on and I would have to have it cleared. Not sure of the brand though. People still steal gas? What has happened to this world? I leave the car unlocked anyway. That is why we have insurance.

I don't think he's worried about fuel theft...

IIRC it was $14 + tax at the local Jag dealership. I left the damn thing at gas pump the first weekend I had the car
A:
The non-Federal Elise have a locking gas door. You might be able to order them from the dealer. But I don't know if the same key is coded for the ignition or if it is a separate key.

Yes, I'm not worried about what could be coming out, but what might be going in.
So the jag cap works?

It fits but is neither locking nor tethered

Does anyone know if our gas door are compatible with other vehicles?
I got a catalog in the mail for StylinConcepts (why I got a catalog for truck & SUV accessories, I'll never understand) and they listed a number of locking billet gas doors (some black, some brushed aluminum).
Billet gas doors
This may be the best way.

Hi guys,
Green Machine posted this on puresportscar forum. Might be worth looking into as locking gas cap.
Chris
to quote greenmachine "It's a Stant 11507 (mounted on a card) or a Stant 10507 in a box. It comes with 2 keys and costs about $14 + S&H on the web. After months of use, my check engine light has yet to come on and the key lock works without trouble."

AHAAH! Finally! Thanks Chris

I did a little cross-checking into the this Stant gas cap.
First, I went to the Stant web site, to their applications part locater page.
I looked up a 2005 Lotus Elise, but they said no parts available.
So, I recalled that in other threads that people said Jaguar gas caps worked. One in particular (the tethered gas cap thread) said that the Jaguar X-type cap worked. So, I looked up a 2003 Jaguar X-type at the Stant web site. And, it came up with the 10507 locking cap, with is the same one that Green Machine found to work. (He posted that it was for a Toyota Tundra, but according to Stant's web site, the Tundra shows a different cap.)
I found the cap for $12 on Amazon, with $5 shipping. However, there is a disclaimer "DUE TO CURRENT EXTREME MARKET SHORTAGES A SUBSTITUTE NATIONAL MANUFACTURERS PRODUCT MAY BE SHIPPED." I don't like that.
Green Machine also posted that the 11507 is the same as the 10507. Amazon also has the 11507, for just a bit less, without the above disclaimer.
I also checked Kragen Auto Parts. They carry the Stant caps, and they list all the vehicles that it works for. Just go to the following link, enter your zip code when it asks, then select a 2002-2003 Jaguar X-type as the vehicle.
It will then take you to a page of all matching gas caps, which are the Stant 10507, 11507, 10837 and 11837. I can't see a difference between the 10 series and the 11 series caps, other than maybe what Green Machine said about the 10 series being in a box and the 11 series being on a card, which appears to be confirmed by the following web page at Stant's web site:
But there is a significant (relative) price difference between the series. And, the same part number shows up multiple times at Kragen at different prices. Weird.
If you open one of the cap description pages, the web page has a link to display all matching vehicles! Now we can have a more thorough list of all other vehicles that could have matching gas caps! Hence, if you want to look for other caps, now you have a big list of potentially matching common vehicles. Here it is:
ACURA
2005 MDX
2004 RSX
2004 - 2005 RL
FORD
1998 - 2000 CONTOUR
2000 - 2004 FOCUS
HONDA
2005 ACCORD
2005 PILOT
2005 CR-V
2006 RIDGELINE
2005 ODYSSEY
JAGUAR
2002 - 2003 X-TYPE
MERCURY
1998 - 2000 MYSTIQUE
VOLKSWAGEN
2004 - 2005 BEETLE
The part description page also shows a link that states "Buy online, pick up today!" if one of your local stores has one. I checked for the 11507, and sure enough, all of my local Kragen stores appear to have it in stock. Maybe I will go pick one up, and just put the gas cap key in the trunk or hidden somewhere in the passenger compartment (I hate extra keys on my keyring). I also checked the 10507, but it is not stocked at the stores.
Note that the above Stant FAQ web page I listed says how you can order multiple caps all keyed the same, for those of you who have multiple Elises, or if you own one of the other cars on the list of matching vehicles. I would guess that in most cases they could probably even key different cap types the same.
Here is a list of other auto parts store that Stant says carries the locking gas caps:
And here is more info from Stant on gas caps:

I bought an Stant 11507 cap today, and so far it seems to work fine (no CEL yet). However, Green Machine just posted a correction that he actually bought an 11509, not 11507. But, the 11507 was listed for the Jaguar X-type, and others have shown that Jaguar X-type caps work. So, there may be multiple acceptable matches.
As far as where to keep the gas cap key:
The cap comes with two keys on a small key ring. I removed one key, and slipped the key ring (still with one key on it) over the rod that holds up the trunk/engine lid. I don't like extra keys on my key ring, and this method keeps it available and secure.

Hi,
This is my first Post. I've had my Elise for about 1 week.
I have a working solution for the Elise locking Gas cap.
The Jaguar Cap listed above does not fully screw into the fuel spout. And could pose a fire hazard.
However I noticed that the Cap from the Stant 11507, or 10507 is the same size as the Elise's. Here are a set of instructions to modify the Stant cap to correctly fit the Elise. It took me about 10 minutes to make this change.
Below is the Stant Cap before any changes:
There is a plastic ring on the bottom of the black part of the cap. Using a small screwdriver, pry this off, as shown below:
Once the ring is removed, you can begin removing the center threaded portion of the cap:
Here is the Jaguar gas cap, compared to the Lotus, you can see that they are not even close:
Now perform the same steps to your Elise's gas cap.
Now that the ring is removed from the Elise's gas cap, take out the center white portion. place it in the Stant black cap as shown below:
Re install the Stant ring, locking the Elise's fuel spout fitting onto the Stant locking gas cap.
You now have a correct locking gas cap for your Elise!
(CYA Mode on):
The above instructions are provided as is, and without any warranty. If you break your gas cap, don't expect a replacement from me. (CYA mode off)

elisenc - Thanks for the awesome writeup!
A:
thanks! How much does the locking cap cost? I'll do this the first day I have my car.
A:
So can you can re-key this lock to work with your Elise key?
A:
Just did the retro fit this morning. Excellent Job EliseNc.
Judging by the size of the elise key and the size of the gas cap key I would
venture to say no. I don't think there is enough depth to the gas cap lid to fit
a key cylinder long enough to fit. You cant have the original cylinder rekeyed
b/c it is a single sides toothed key wheras the Elise key is dual toothed.
Unless they have key cylinders that only need a key inserted partialy in the key cylinder
to lock unlock then I think we have no dice. I keep my gas key on my house key
ring. I don't know if this is an old school habit but my grandfather carried his
house keys on one key ring and on another carried his truck keys. I do what
he does do
