Front Clam Damage - How Costly Is It?

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
MattG - The service tech told me patching the fiberglass would reduce the amount of stress the area can handle. Replacing the clam will give a better and longer lasting repair.

ZTEC - Nick, I was already thinking of doing that. I'm picking up my old clam today! Talk to you soon, I hope.

I am not the fiber expert but it would make sense that a repair could be made stronger with reinforcement making it stronger than before It sounds like to me replacement is just easier.

This hole clam thing is a joke, fiber glass repair shops are all over florida, and it should be a 2000 part, 2300 max, R & R and paint if for 4000k. Dealers are saying lets see we do not sell too many of them there loti so we sure as hell need to make a bundle on oil changing and body work, yup, them there folks have money to burn. I know the clam is thin, molded frp or composite, but is still a 2000 part. and to charge 4k for takin it off and paint, o thats right star shield is 2500 too. That felt good.

Do yourself a favor. Have the clam replaced because it looks like the damage is significant but tell the body shop you would like to keep the old clam. That's what I did. That way, if I ever have damage in a non-insured situation like the track, I can repair the old clam without being out $6000

Let's see.. A "simple road rash scrape on the bottom of the front clam will cost you $1000 to repair and paint to match. Been there, done that. Then while the shop was moving the car, they got rear-ended. Replacement of the rear clam and all the assorted labor... a little over $9000. Includes the StarShield replacement. Fortunately I didn't have to pay for that little adventure - but it did take them 5 weeks to get the car back to me.

Do you mind if I ask what your compensation is for diminished value? The reason I ask is that someone else was driving my car when it was crashed and it was on my insurance. I didn't think to claim diminished value on my car from my insurance but I'm curious how much and how diminished value is calculated. Thanks.

I got $5500 diminished value, but it was for one of those "rare Exige collectibles".
