Strange Car Noise... Have you had this?

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
There are so many rattles in this car the only solution is to try and not think about it. Not easy to do. If i could fix this metalic rattle I would though. This has been an issue since day one. I have two different rattles. I'm not sure if they're related. One, is the famous metalic rattle that disappears when you're on the throttle. The other is when I'm coming to a stop or slowing down. The second is way louder. And I wonder if people on the street can hear it. I gave up long ago on either of these since the answer is always, that all the cars have those noises. I'd love to fix them though.

I have the same noise on my car. I will see if it's the shear panel when I change the oil this weekend.

try to hold the stick shifter "firmly" to one side then ther other while keeping the sound steady. i bet it goes away. try it in different gears. i think it is the shifter cables resonance.
and yes it sounds like it is coming from the passenger side but i bet this will be the ticket. nothing to do about it as of yet, dealer says

Hmm, I never use the AC

Ah, I bet that is it. I will try it on my drive home from work tonight.

being very sensitive to sounds i tracked this down while on my 600 mile trip home from the dealership. i actually never noticed it in my first 05 car. i took MC2's car out for a drive and pointed it out to him as a favor!LOL now he hears it to, he thougth it was engine noise too! PM me and let me know if it is the same thing. once you know what it is it doesn't bother you as much!piece of mind i guess

Yep. The passenger sill contains the A/C feed & return pipes, heater return pipe, and the coolant feed pipe. The driver's sill contains the electrical harness, the coolant return pipe, and the heater feed pipe. There's also one brake line in each sill. The service manual also implies there's an oil feed line in one sill, and a return line in the other, but it isn't clear about which is which. There's a row of oil line clamps bonded to the inside of each sill, so presumably there's one oil line running through each. These are neoprene hoses.

I love that you can feel the heat coming from those various lines through the sill on the driver's side. I like to put my hand down there (under the plastic) just to feel it sometimes. It's like the car's pulse.
