? about summit point and tracking the car in general

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
going up to summit point tomorrow to do the friday at the track and had a couple questions. they first question is do i need to put my hard top on or can i use the soft top. second question is for those with experience at summit point. this will be the first time on a track for me and i must admit im a little nervous. how hard is it to wreck your car? i know the instructors are with you and tell you what to do but i was looking for a little reassurance.

With a little practice you should be able to do that no problem.

FATT is pretty loose, you can run topless. I prefer the hardtop, especially if tomorrow's weather is anything like today . As long as you take it easy, you should have no problem. There are tons of Summit Point track videos on google/youtube. Watch them and learn the track before you go. It will help.

This video here is one of the best I have seen for SPR:

Note that the complaints about track safety don't apply to the main track.

My suggestion would be to put the top on when you bring it to the track. Worst case you can always take it off if the weather is nice. Your SOL if you plan for a nice day and its too cold.

I think summit is a good first track, for the most part there is lots of run-off. I'm no track expert but here is my advice:

- Make sure you go over with the instructor what to do if the car does go off the track.
- If you get tired then stop! Its better to lose a run than lose a car.
- Remember not to lift on the throttle in a turn, or have the instructor go over how to throttle steer. It's actually fun to play with when you want to do it, can scare the **** out of you if your not expecting it.
- Like taxcheat said...take it easy. Stay within your limits and you should be just fine.

I think this link might be of help:

Damn, I wish could have got into tomorrows novice run group. Have fun and take it easy and you should be fine. I had a blast when I went.

thanks for all the advice guys

Most of the incidents you see at Summit Point come from losing it as you go through 5, trying to catch it, and running into the wall on the left between 5 and 6. Just drive well within your limits and you will be fine. Don't try to keep up with everyone just because you have a Lotus, the guy behind you may have more track time.

Take the hard top.
Watch C.Gomez video from the track that he posted. He drives a nice line. Memorize it.

If you do drop a wheel or two at the trackout point coming into the main straight do not try to steer sharply back onto the asphalt. Slowly gain control of the car and ease it back onto the track.

Check out this thread, I got on the soapbox earlier, and so did some other people...

Enjoy, and be safe.
