A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Thanks for the heads up on the Novus products..
Percy's says that they apply a coating and then bake it into the polycarbonate making it very scratch resistant.
Even if I have to replace it once a year I think it would be worth the weight savings. Percy's insists that their windshields are better than glass in almost every way. We will see.....
I don't have a wiper or even a wiper motor for that matter. I asked Percy's if I needed to run with Rain-X and he said that the treated polycarbonate sheds water really well as if it already has Rain-X on it.

I went ahead and cut off 1/2 the windshield header(new hack saw blade, slowly, carefully, did the trick). Header is very brittle, foam filled, and cuts cleanly. Trimmed the sharp edges. Weight savings is not much(approx 2+lbs).
Visibility is the payoff. No more fat header in your face and to the sides above the mirrors. Relatively thin roll bar tubes are far smaller and less bulky but are a bit closer in.
We are scheduled to install the Speedglass on Wednesday of next week. I will either fix the top of the windshield to the roll cage or do the Speedster thing and cut it as a 1/2 glass ala Ariel Atom....
According to Percy's the stock windshield weighs in at 26lbs and the Lexan one (un-trimmed) comes in at 12lbs(54%weight savings ).

Am I hoping for too much?
The rear and side panels shouldn't be a problem since they are flat glass.
You should be able to call percy's get flat sheets shipped and have a glass shop cut them. And for the back window, scratch resistant probably isn't too important, so you could just pick up a sheet of uncoated Lexan from a local glass shop and have it cut.

You can get Lexan with a coating from the factory. It's Lexan Mar-Gaurd

how about the VIN? You just going to peel it off from the old windshield? will the VIN rip off? or will it go off easily?

It must just come off - how do all these people with cracked windshields handle this?
A:
The VIN is actually separate from the windshield. When you remove the windshield it is left sitting there in mid air.
Side windows are very curved.

Guys, this product should be on sale next week.

All the windshields will have the anti-scratch coating. We are not working on the side and rear windows, but if there is enough demand for it... we probably will. As for the weight saving it is as Perry said:
Stock windshield = 26 lbs
Sector111 windshield = 12 lbs
Let me know if have anymore questions.

So if we catch a rock in our windshield will Sector 111 work with insurance companies on getting a polycarbonate windshield?
Any cost figures yet?
Also... any safety data? I don't want shards of polycarbonate material slicing through me and a passenger in case the unspeakable happens.

hmmmm...no. This product will have a huge disclaimer on it that basically will say... For Track use only These windshields are not street legal. I doubt an insurance company would ever agree to replace a glass windshield with a Poly one. Again, this windshield is NOT for street use.

Finally got some pictures of the install but they were too large once again. My buddy showed me how to resize them but I'll never remember how to do it..
In this shot they are trying to get the windshield oriented correctly. They then marked it for cutting to allow for the sectioned windshield frame. The surface area to be epoxied to the frame is then stripped of the hardened coating(sanded), primed a couple of times, and finally epoxied in. We are going to fabricate an aluminum header/tray that will tab to the roll cage and bolt(or epoxy) to the top edge of the windshield. I like the fact that I can see better to each side now and have lost a bit of weight in the process. Win Win...
Yes I am insane when it comes to weight reduction
We left the windshield oversized("approx. 1" in all directions")and used the increased height to get a cleaner air flow over the roll bar and cabin area. Sort of makes up for removing the frame.

download the tools I gave you in the other link and install. Then its as easy as right click> resize picture. Then choose the size and click ok.
there is a link again. You can do batches of pics as well. It is by far the easiest resizing method I have found
oh ya the car looks good

To me, it is still easier to use the free Elisetalk gallery. Automatically resizes the pics and gives you the image codes ready to copy and paste.

LURKER!

Here is another install picture from a different angle..

And another showing the cut off windshield frame lying on the back of the car.
