Sector 111 Polycarbonate Speedglass Windshield

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
And a picture of the windshield alone...
A:
Is that an oil cooler on top of the roll cage?
A:
Yes it is.. It may stay there with a roof scoop to feed it or it might migrate to the trunk in which case I will install NACA ducts on top of the rear fenders and cut an exhaust vent between the tailights.
A:
Would you please post a close-up of the cross-section of the windshield frame?

Thanks,

Joe
A:
You can see it in the photos but I don't have a closeup..
It looks to be Fiberglas Reinforced Plastic approx 1/16"-1/8" thick filled with Polyurethane foam.
A:
Thanks. Sorry, I can't see it.

Do you think it would be damaged by drilling a couple of holes into it? (To mount a mirror up high)

Thanks,
Joe
A:
If you drill into it to mount something you will get no bite on any other area than the outer thin wall(polyurethane foam will easily tear out). Be careful not to tighten too much and pre-drill so you don't crack the outer shell. I would use a semi soft mounting pad(say firm foam rubber)under your mounting bracket then tighten until the pad compresses almost all the way.. Good luck...
A:
thanks.
A:
I must have missed it. What was the cost again?
A:
Here are some photos of the install. You can see the increased visibility at eye level. We are installing full length retention tabs on the side supports and four smaller tabs along the bottom edge to keep the epoxy from getting weak. The polycarbonate is surprisingly sound structurally with only 1/2 of it epoxied in. I will drive the car and see how much the top edge flexes at high speed to see I we can get away with no top reinforcements. The increase in visibility is so pronounced that I really want to leave the top edge unobstructed.
