A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Can anyone direct me to a place that now rents the Elise in the West LA area? After the test drive, I really like it, but I'd want to spend a day or two trying it out in my daily lifestyle. Do the general car rental places have them (Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, etc), or should I go to a specialty rental place? Is there a significant deposit on these vehicles as well? I notice that some higher end exotics require a deposit before getting the keys..

Enterprise Santa Barbara is West of LA :-)

Slowly in and out of driveways.
Have fun!
I disagree somewhat - the rental agencies put the fear of god into you. I was MORE careful. It costs like $300/day and you will be charged for every day that they decide it is out of commission. Standard rental terms, but at that price it's got a potential for abuse especially if the rental agency is independent.

Yeah when I rented from Rent A vette the contract was like 3 pages long, they went over the car with a fine tooth comb. And I had to use MY insurance. The contract was skewed way way in their favor as to who decides what was damaged by normal use and such. I was paranoid as hell the entire time I was driving it for 2 days , almost to the point that it ruined the experience.
Though one thing to keep in mind, the car you are renting was most likely not broken in correctly and has been totally trashed . The one I rented had like 600 miles on it and the clutch was shot as were the brakes. When I took delivery of my Elise the clutch and brakes where 100 times better than the rental.

Rent-A-Vette, totally agree. That's where I rented. I returned it after just a few hours because I had all the info I needed and it was just a liability at that point. I would have liked to drive it more, but I was too scared!

Thanks for the help! I'll give Enterprise at Sepulveda and Olympic a ring. I'd be a bit concerned about what they consider any damage if I bring it back with any, but I'll review their terms when I meet them.

So, I take it that a majority of the rental Elise come back in good condition. I'm hoping Zen Garage would chime in.

Yes, I read his thread about him acquiring some Elises to rent, but am not sure if he's in my neck of the woods (can't remember which thread it was). Is Rent-a-Vette in LA as well? The Google turns it up in Las Vegas..

well if you dont mind coming to chicago look me up www.lotus4rent.com
i dont really feel that the contracts are skewed in our favor. we are giving you our asset and expect you to treat it like its your own. i personally own and I personally SELF INSURE my enire fleet. like many operators. we do need to be careful who we rent to and would rather limit our exposure than have these cars on the road with 100% utilization.
i do not want to jinx myself, but knock wood we have had zero damage. we also have monitoring devices that record top speed, rpm, hard launchs and stops. everyone has been nice to my babies

I just rented on from the enterprise on sunset, its right next to saddle ranch. If you call them ask for Alex. He was a great guy to work with. They worked with me on the price. It's 150 miles a day and .25 a mile after that. I think I put almost 400 miles on the car ( I picked it up on friday evening and returned sunday at 4pm. ) and they didnt say a word. I guess maybe I technically had it 2 1/2 - 3 days but who knows.
Great guys to work with and I would recommend them again. Their number is (323) 654-4222

You might want to check out this story in Car & Driver, where they rented 4 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-H vehicles for a "test".
The description of the whole renting process was both funny and eye-opening.
Of note, Hertz puts an "Engine Security Seal" on the engine to prevent and/or detect any tampering or parts removal/swapping.
Here is the link:
