Realistic Milage on Stock tires?

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
I get about 4,500 miles on those tires.
daily driver
About 9,000 miles first year. Expect that to drop to about 5,000 per year now. So, that will be one set of tires per year.

have fun

A:
The Elise base tires are so underappreciated. They are way more civil than the A048s. They can last 15,000-20,000 miles in just-driving conditions. They are excellent wet or dry. They are readily available. They are the fastest street tires sold by Tire Rack per their tests using a BMW. They have wonderful steering feel and their understeer tendencies can be handled via setup and driving strategy.

With some alignment changes and on sport sized wheels they can deliver close to 1.1 g cornering with flickers quite a bit past that. Below is a plot from an autocross on asphalt with that setup. Course times were about 2 seconds slower than a well driven Elise on new Hoosier A6 gummies. That's not much considering that all I did was add a pound of air and turn up the shock damping for the event.

Good question. I love them so far.
Here are my impressions:
(street use only, no track. Tires have not been fully
broken in yet.)
1. Ride is much smoother. The car doesn't rattle
as much, and I no longer hear the rashy ping of
crap being thrown up off the road at the car.
The tires are very quiet compared to the Yokos,
allowing for civilized conversation with the top
off.
2. They are available! A048 LTS just plain aren't
available right now. Price is good at Tire Rack.
3. Wear, wear wear. Goodyear has a nice, long
prorated warranty on mileage. These should last
a few years. 12,000-15,000 would be fine with me.
4. Grippy--dry AND wet. Check out the Car and Driver
Dec 05 review of performance tires. I have not
really pushed the car very hard yet, but I haven't noticed
much change in grip. I have noticed a little bit
of tread squirm, which makes the car feel a
tiny bit less responsive. It also feels less
twitchy, which is a plus to me. Roads are a mess
here (overused and underfunded) so anything that
smooths out the ride and makes the car last
a little longer is fine with me.
I expect the feel to evolve with break-in. Fronts are 205,
(F1 don't come in 195) so obviously that is
going to change feel a little bit from stock.

thanks... I have been looking to go to lighter wheels from my non LSS wheels but really dont want 048 tires...sounds like a great alternative...

I think I might add that the C6 vette uses a version
of the F1, and anyone who reads Food & Track Magazine
knows that the Vette performs just fine on them.

Welp, I was right about my rear 048s. I got one more track day and one more autox out of them and now they're toast @ 3700 miles. The wear pattern is indicative of overinflation but I got some good advice (26/28psi hot - I dropped 3s off my time!) at my last autox, so I'm hoping for more out of the next set.

I got 15K miles on my 048's. Just replaced them, worn out in the center (over inflated?)
A:
12K miles on my AD07's. Replaced with stock through tire rack, installed by dealer ($180 for install and balancing the fronts which are pretty good still). They were totally bald and not safe when I replaced them. More wear in the center (although not overinflated) Tried to limit driving in rain. They should of been replaced at about 8500 miles for safety. No autocross or track days, but I had plenty of fun on them.

Ooooohhhh - a Rorschach test! I see a monkey with a datalogger.

Michelins? LOL - I'd expect the PS2s to be around the same level as the AD07s and not anywhere near as good.

I expect 3k, on the outside, on A048s.

I don't have the sports package and I just changed the rear tires at 20200 miles. That must be some kind of record!

The fronts look pretty good and I think will last till at least 40,000 miles.
A:
3,000 on my AO48s. Death in the wet.

Switched to Toyo T1Rs for street use, and I put the AO48s in a second set of rims just for track day use.
A:
My rear AD07s have about 0.5 mm of tread left on them after 15,113 miles. The new ones are in my basement and will be installed in the spring. The fronts are still fine. I was considering getting the fronts swapped (rotated), but I'm not sure if that's a great idea.
A:
My touring Elise with the AD07's have 6,700 miles on them. So far no real issues with wear and there is plenty of tread left.

BTW, anyone else think this was scribble at first?

Unless you have the NASCAR effect where one tire has more wear than the other I wouldn't do it. You could rotate the fronts but the thread would be backwards. I've thought about this and wanted to unmount the tires off the wheel and rotate it that way. But if I did this I would need to get the wheels balanced again. Not worth it IMHO.

John By swapped I mean rubber taken off ... then put on opposite sides. There are no white-walls or other way to tell this has been done on these tires. Is there anything that's really that bad about it? They need to be balanced anyway. I know they're directional ... just looking to maximize any mileage I can get out of the fronts. It seems most people go through two sets of rears to every one set of fronts.

Yeah, if you want to balance again why not? The way the wheels are cambered you are using all the tire by unmounting then rotating.

My rear AD07's at about 9,500 miles...

They look much better in the photo than they did in person, they were almost completely smooth all the way across. The fronts felt like they were around 50% at the most. With timing/wear like that I'll probably change all 4 together next time.
