Weight Reduction: Best Bang for the Buck

A&Q about Lotus

True, but I was referring to how the S1 loses weight on it's own, at no cost to the owner. So, weight reduction for an S1 owner is $0 per pound.

I believe the weight difference is more like 300 pounds, although it may have been as much as 400 at one point. Or, I could be completely mistaken . . .

Anyway, S1 Elises in the states are rare.

Odyssey 545 battery. 12.0 lbs vs. 13.2 lbs for the 625! Same price!

Micromirror? (ha!)

There are lots of free and/or relatively low cost weight savings opportunities from the removal of trim, heat shield and interior parts that you've left out. So this list is really a schedule of weight savings by spending money on batteries, aftermarket exhaust systems and clams.

You might want to add:

Volk - CE28n - 15x7, 16x8 - weight savings 9lbs.(unsprung) - price $1,600 - $/lb=$177.77

before posting i read though the thread, and was surpirised nobody else said this first.
reducing wiehgt is one thing, but what you get in return is another thing.
THE best weight reducing to do in my less than humble opinion(IMLTHO) is to cat the larini (or arqray) track decat pipe. you drop weight, BUT you GAIN horsepower. my car was a different beast on trackdays with the larini decat.
loosing wieght= good thing
loosing wieght WHILE increasing horsepower= better thing

What does "...to cat the larini (or arqray) track decat pipe...." mean exactly?

LSS wheels = 55 lbs for the set

Net savings: 3lbs.

Are you talking a different set of wheels, or are those numbers wrong?

If the Toybox weights are given per wheel, that's 74.5lbs for the set, an increase, not a decrease. Good point about unsprung... will try to note that. fronts 2(2.2*5.5)=24.2 lbs
rears 2(2.2*6.4)=28.16
or 52 pounds for the set...
elsewhere on the sector111 spreadsheet, they are listed at 12.05 lbs for the fronts and 13.7 lbs for the rears, or about 51 lbs, so they are actually a 4-5 pount savings in weight...
somewhere i read that losing 1 pound of unsprung weight was like losing 2 pounds of sprung weight but i havent been able to validate that claim...

Taxcheat you rule! Thanks for putting this together. Any input on the Quicksilver exhausts? I can't even find them to buy

Those are exhaust options. Only a finite amount of space allowed in the "CODE" tables.

Volk and Toybox48 wheels added, SSRs reflect TireRack weight (hope they're not cheating ). Are LSS wheels 55lbs or 52lbs? I have the quicksilver weight savings from S111, but not the price since they're not listed any more.

so a full CF body would cost me about the same as what it would cost me if I traded in my 05 elise for an exige S, assuming it will sell for 65-70k. What would the 224 lb wt loss be equivalent to in hp gain? I know there is a formula floating around somewhere...
A:
10 lbs = 1 hp (or so).
A:
great spreadsheet!
Let's keep it going.

Question:
Are we sure the CF body saves that much weight???
I doubt the FG Elise body weighs that much... (224lbs)

Also, how about multiplying the unsprung weight loss by 4 (I think that's the widely accepted correction factor).
That would make them jump up the list (as they should).

Also, please add us poor blokes with the STD wheels, we get even better returns when changing wheels.

I dont know the specs on the arqray, just the larini, as that is what I purchased for mine. they have 3 types, mine is the straight pipe for track use.

Mike
I've been joking with the wife for some time that I'm trying to lose roughly 3hp! Yeah, I know... 30lbs is quite a bit though. More importantly, it's 30lbs above the CG line!

Might help my performance as well!

I think what he meant to type was to de-cat (remove the cat). Larini makes a de-cat pipe that fits in line with the stock exhaust or their own. I nearly got the silenced one this past week when I put on their exhaust. I'm still tempted as the silenced (good deal quieter according to Pete and more livable on the street) is about $322 plus shipping. Not a bad thing when it comes to adding a bit of power, sound, burbling, etc.

So you're actually putting money in your wallet and saving weight at the same time.

Another way of looking at it would be, what would it cost you to drop 500lbs from a Fed car?
A:
Sun visors with posts are about 2 lbs . Header heat shields are 7 lbs. Muffler heat shields are 8 lbs. Rear panel is 5 lbs.

Deleting the "cat" on my Miata was supposed to be worth 2 hp. What is the 11 hp figure here for "de-cat"-ing the Elise based on?

My "butt dyno" would agree with their claim.

Does anyone here roll around with only a driver's seat and the passenger seat taken out?

That's a free mod right there!
