Last year when I got pulled over at just over 120mph, I was startled by the cop's lights in my rearview, and immediately pulled into the breakdown lane and stepped on the brakes rather hard. You should see what those grooves feel like at that speed! Incedentally, the cop pulled into the breakdown lane behind me, and then quickly went back into the driving lane as I was out-braking him. He ended up about 4 car lengths in front of me, and I heard his ABS pulsating as he passed. Oops.

At the LOG26 Concorse I noticed a local officer walking around looking at the cars. I said, "Uh-oh, I guess we're all busted for no front license plates!" He just laughed and said he had been driving by and saw all the cool cars and wanted to come look.

I know how you feel. I got pulled over, but fortunately, my babe in the car has the negotiating skills of a CAA agent on speed. My advice is to go the speed limit, especially on side streets.......

I think it will be someplace in the neighborhood of $50-60 shipped. I'm not exactly sure how much, but I'd like to know if there is any interest? If there is sufficient interest, I'll pursue machine shop quotes. Pics?

Scroll down to see a rather nice one...

Here's the poll...

PA = no front plate

You should move.

Anyone ever tried retrofitting those 3M hooks to attach to the front?

I would believe it could be done quite easily.

Dare I ask what the outcome of THAT stop was? I can't imagine it was good.....

I did that years ago with a CHP officers in their patrol car - I was on my motorcycle. They stopped about 150 feet up the road, and had to back up down the side of the freeway.

Turned out they had noticed my headlight was out (daytime and not required), and were pulling me over to tell me. Instead, they managed to "check things out" for nearly an hour - by that time, it was dusk, and they issued me a ticket for non-working headlight. They won in the end...

HE actually got out of the car with a smile on his face, so I think he found the braking thing amusing. That quickly turned to the stoneface "serious cop" look that they all do. He said to me "Is there any reason why you were driving that fast, except for the fact that you can?". I gave my usual ambiguious reply of, "I'm sorry officer, I don't have an answer to your question." He told me that he could take me away in handcuffs, but that he was doing me a favor and gave me a summons. This all happened while traveling, so I hired an attorney to appear in my place, which I understand you're not really supposed to do, but it's tolerated in Connecticut. He got it reduced to a simple charge of "traveling above the posted speed limit" which was a $60 fine and no points on my license. The attorney fee was $250 I beleive. Overall I think it turned out very well, and I consider myself lucky.

I will post some pics tonight.

Sorry for the delay. I pulled that post because I realized I needed pictures to make it make any sense.

It is a very sweet solution. It's light, no holes, and it doesn't lower the front end clearance...thus no scraping. All the other solutions I've seen don't do that. Thus I designed my own.

OK, here are some pics of the mount.

I think it's the simplest mount bracket concept available.

The top part of the mount attaches to the tow hook area and then the plate is screwed onto it.

The bottom can be simply a piece of foam tape to hold the bottom of the plate to the clam, or a channel of aluminum that holds the plate steady. I'm not sure which I like better.

Either way, the mount weighs in at 100 gms without the channel on the bottom and 115 gms with the channel.

Like I said in my initial post, I hope to be able to make this available for about $50-60. I'm going to check with machine shops for pricing. If all goes well, I will also make it available for wholesale to Lotus dealers.

Please let me know if you are interested and I'll let you know if/when it is available.

Joe

Edit: ignore the condition of the license plate, I had it mounted in the "traditional" mount and it got wacked around pretty well. I'm getting a new one soon.

If you really want a front plate, you could probably just use some strong double-stick foam tape to stick the plate to the flat spot on the front of the car. I would rather risk a ticket, because sticking a plate there completely spoils the lines of the car, in my opinion.

That front spot isn't flat, it curves about 12mm from center to edge. You get maybe 150mm of semi-flat.

Besides, that's tacky...no pun intended. Also, you need to make sure it's at or above the edge as it will scrape bottom.

By the way, I don't think I'll make much selling these, but I thought it would be nice for Elise owners to be able to mount a front plate without drilling or damaging their clam.

RegGuy, I'm interested! I know the purists will hate me, but I already got a "no front license" ticket on another one of my cars here in CA and I have no interest in giving the cops a reason to pull this car over. I don't want to drill the clam though.

Any problems with air intake with the license partial blockage?
A:
Intake is on the back of your seat, it draws air from side scoop
