A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Ha, I have to admit guilt here... I took blinkwatt out for a ride when he came over and pick up some parts for my old Boxster.
I went to my first AutoX last weekend with PCA. Lots of BoxsterS are doing well, very close to Elise. I got totally smoked by several CaymanS on street tires. Yes, some more midrange torque on the Elise would be better.

I work for everything I have. I wasn't considering the 360 soon, perhaps in 5 years or so. The Lotus is more reasonably priced=I can buy it alot sooner. It pays to have a decent job and know how to manage your money at a young age.

Hey! I was wondering if you were on this board!

Safety-wise, the car held up very well in a front-quarter impact. It's a really tough structure. The bonded and riveted parts are stronger than traditional welds.
$23,000 for a front clam!

Why is it that when 19 year olds talk about buying a $50k car as a "weekend" car I know I'm never going to see my Social Security payments.

Lol,come on I'm just being reasonable. I will always keep my Boxster,it's the first car I bought on my own and it's practical as a daily driver car. Now the Lotus....is not a daily driver car,I would get ticket after ticket after ticket after ticket......You get the idea.

Prediction: You will use your Lotus as a daily driver, and then sell the Boxster because it never gets driven.

Do you always make assumptions about people who you know nothing about? A lot of people think the same about me because I drive an Elise; they don't know anything about the car, and assume I must be rich because I drive it. That really pisses me off; I hate that type of thinking.

You are also an intelligent young man; too bad others make assumptions about you based on what you are thinking about buying or already own.

Aren't you assuming that he's an intelligent young man? How do you know that? You state that it's tood bad that "others make assumptions about you based on what you are thinking about buying or already own" - so why do you feel so free in assuming that he's intelligent?

I come from driving a Boxster, which is a great handling car,w/ mild speed and great braking so I am not wowwed easily. The moment the owner took me out in it I could tell the car wasn't for the weak hearted. The handling was crisp, the speed there but not too much like a Viper, the braking was great!!!!!! Man it was awesome, the moment I stepped out of that car I instantly decided I'm buying that as my weekend car instead of a 360 Modena. I think I will stop buy the local Lotus deal tommorow and see what they have in stock to get more of an idea of what I want. Granted I won't be able to buy it soon, but hey who knows I think I could put off buying a house for year...
Can someone explain to me the difference between the Elise and Exige?
Can anyone give me an idea of what insurance is like?
I pay $4k a year for me(19 year old) on a 99' Boxster.
The Boxster is one of the best handling cars I've ever driven, but you will appreciate the lightness of the Elise. My boxster still has better turn-in than the Elise, but I can carry much more speed through the corners in the Elise. The Elise is not nearly as practical, but that doesn't sound like an issue for you. If it was, I would suggest a Cayman instead.
I agree with the prediction above that you will likely sell your Boxster as the Elise is very similar. I still have mine, but I've driven it so infrequently since I bought the Elise that it just doesn't make sense to keep it (my wife thinks differently as she loves the easy to drive Boxster, and thinks the Elise is a "tin can" so I'll keep it for now!).
As for insurance, the Elise is rated a "22" vs. a "19" for my 2.5L 99 Boxster. I pay about $750/yr for the Boxster and $900/yr for the Elise- both listed at 5K miles per year with USAA, so higher milage, younger age (I'm 38) or a different company will increase your rates.
Hope this helps

You are absolutely right; let me restate that. If you read my first response on this thread you would have seen that I wrote "you SEEM like a very reasonable young man." So let me restate what I wrote later. He seems like an intelligent young man. I'm basing this on what I have read from him so far.
My apologies, and your comment was absolutely correct mini63; I deserved that.
I just get a little annoyed when people think I am "loaded" because of my Elise. I own it because I have a passion for cars and work hard for it; it did not just land in my lap and was certainly not given to me by parents who are very well off. I think the other guy really made a stretch on his comments, I on the other hand was just impressed with some of the things that blinkwatt wrote; he seems ahead of the average 19 year old and replied maturely and intelligently, IMHO.

I'm 19 and work my ass off too. No way I'll ever be able to afford even an Elise (I drive a Cobalt, haha), but I'm here because I have a passion for Lotus and deep respect for all things automotive.
That's a passion we all share, so enough with the "you're rich" talk. To me, everyone here is filthy stinking rich anyway

Never say never... I was 19 & working my ass off & driving a Hyundai Stellar (definitely a misnomer!), went to school, got a good job, now I have an Elise...

Nope, I'm not usually one to make an assumptions, BUT lets be honest here...he's looking at a 200,000 car or somewhere in that range...dont know what going rate is for a modena? I know where you're coming from...I'm 20, and have had a 350Z, 06 Infiniti FX35 loaded, and now I drive a Acura TL that looks nice. No, they're not 55K cars..well the Infiniti almost is...but EVERYONE always assumed that my parents bought it for me. They haven't paid for a single dime of anything I own, I work my ass off.
All I was saying is, it seems a little unreasonable that a 19 y/o looking at a Ferrari...but now that he clarified it wouldn't be for a couple years, that makes more sense. A Lotus is something more reasonable IMO. I make almost 45k a year, and go to college...I think I'm doing pretty well for myself at 20 years old - can i afford a ferarri? hell no! Best of luck to you man, hopefully it all works out. I'm sure I wasn't the only one on here wondering why a 19y/o was considering a ferarri, I was just the first one to say it...no need to flame.
