OMG.... INSURANCE!?

A&Q about Lotus

Q:

I have a spotless record. This car is the most expensive I've ever had! $155/month with a $500 deductable! This is $60 more than my 911 Turbo and $65 more than the E60 M5! OMG
This with it being a non-primary car. I can't imagine what the under 25 crowd who use it as a daily driver are paying!

I should have checked this first before buying the car. lol

I ended up raising my deductable to $1000 and it brough it down to $116.

Maybe I should call Geico? hehe I'm w/ state farm now.
A:
I got my Exige when I was 25. State Farm quated ~$200/month. I switched to Wawanesa (only avaialable on the west coast though) and my rate dropped to $67/month with the same coverage and much lower deductibles. I checked several other companies, many of which were cheaper that SF.
A:
I found AllState to be the cheapest for me locally. (I wouldn't go with Geico if they were the cheapest, it seems like a conflict of interest to provide speed detection equipment to the tax collectors AND insure drivers )

You should see what it's like with a 17-year-old son on the policy. Even though he's listed as the primary driver of a different car on the policy, the combination of the Elise and the 17-year-old is absurd. I would be very happy to pay $155/month. I'm paying considerably more than double that, with a $1000 deductible.
A:
Scott, I'm in the houston area also. I don't have a Lotus but I am an insurance agent if you need help let me know.
A:
State Farm, huh? Me too. You might want to check to be SURE that it's really being insured as your non-primary car. When I insured mine with SF, I had a bit of trouble with that as their default is to make your newest cars your primary cars. I tried to convince them over the phone that this really isn't the sort of thing I would WANT to use daily, and finally decided to just drive it down to my agent's office so they could judge for themselves. As soon as they saw it they were quite agreeable to making it 'for pleasure use only', not one of my primaries. While they thought it was a great little car, my demo of getting in/out and showing them the lack of storage space help convince them that it really IS just a weekend toy.
A:
Wow...those numbers are insane. Mine is $565 per year, with a $500 collision deductible and a $100 comprehensive deductible, maxxed liability. I'm 40 with a clean record and it's a secondary car.

If in CA, call Wawanesa - you won't be disappointed...

Good man; not many people know that. I basically hate all insurance companies (all scum in my book), but I especially hate Geico. I would NEVER insure a car with that scum; they are the lowest of the low.
A:
Scott ! Try Allstate

You should see if you can sign some form of waiver (or something) to exclude him from it and reduce your insurance costs. When I was that age, my mom bought a new RX-7 and did something along those lines. Just having me under her roof would have otherwise put her in the poor house insurance-wise.

Of course, that also meant no chance of driving her RX-7... which was torture.

Fortunately, a guy she was dating had a Scirocco and saw fit to teach me to drive properly.

Yep.

I moved in with my Dad and they were going to drop his insurance policy because of my record.

I believe it's called an exclusion, you both sign it. Says something like you both know that he can't drive any cars on the policy.

Some of the lamer companies won't offer to do it, even though they can, you have to ask for it sometimes.
A:
Egads! I have 4 cars and 2 motorcycles (including the Elise, Miata, Wrangler (that actually costs more to insure than the lotus) the wifes Camry, and two sportbikes) with State Farm and my rates are about $155!?!?! Where do you live that they are quoting something that obscene?
A:
Wow, that is high. I don't pay that for both of my vehicles combined. I'm also carrying a much higher coverage because I figure if I ever hit someone in the lotus they are guarenteed to have whiplash.

I also recommend Allstate.
A:
For the Elise + Vehicross my insurance was over $350 a month.

For the Audi, it will drop to about $125 a month.

That's for $500k coverage + all the extras with $500 deductible in Miami from State Farm.
A:
State Farm in Texas is charging about $1700/year. My other cars are much, much cheaper.

State Farm covers track events.
A:
What I wouldn't give to only be paying $155/month on the Elise!
GA, Progressive. 28, single. One really nasty ticket (which didn't raise my rate when it went on the record, suprisingly!?), and one more going on soon.

that last sentence is KEY

I'll probably stay put w/ State Farm. I am going to investigate having it only cover me and not my wife to see if that helps. She'll never drive it and doesn't want to.
A:
go to costco and look at the bord for auto insurance.
my insurance went up about $10 (from one car to two)
and I was still $50ish less then A.I.S. for just the one
the other car is a mitubishi montero
A:
Must be all those clam shell claims. Most of the ones I've seen are easily repairable.
A:
I pay around $880 for the Elise in TX. I'm with progressive and have been for years. Each year I shop around and, for me, nobody is cheaper. Most places I ask say they can't beat my rates/coverage.

I also have 2 other cars that are super high risk -- Mitsu Evos. For all 3 cars I pay ~$1900 a year. Perfect record, married, live in the boonies. If you ask, Progressive will use your credit score to reduce it (assuming that its a good score). That put me in the top 1% of all their insureds, so they dropped my rates a LOT.

FWIW, the Elise was cheaper than my 996C2.
