A&Q about Lotus

WTF #1: The MINI was approx $38K (yes, it has every option you can choose except one, Nav). The Civic was approx $21K. They both have the same drivers and same usage. The MINI is cheaper to insure by $100/year.

The fast & furious crowd loves Honda Civics. That's why the Integra owns the top ten list for stolen cars (three or so different years make the top ten list). Civics are not immune from this either. Our used Civic DX hatchback with automatic was surprisingly pricey to insure.

If you think insuring a Lotus is expensive (Geico did not even know what it was), try insuruing a Boxster or Porsche Cayman (911 is the worst obviuosly). I think because it is a Porsche name the premiums jump by 20% even for a used car!!!

My State Farm policy ran me right about $800 for a year for a $1000 deductable. People, the rates on these cars are only going to go up. Judging from the frequency of damage threads on this forum, these cars must be way up on the bell curve of damage versus such a low quantity.

I have USAA and my Elise costs $438 every six months. On the same policy, my Mini Cooper S runs $372 and my TJ is $90 (liability only) ($900 total). Overall, not too bad for three cars.

Since it is not your daily driver, you should consider an exotic auto policy through Hagerty. It will be much less.

what he said, also check out Grundy.

I have a ****ty driving record and my premium is $ 500 every 6 months for the Elise. Totalled a 911 in a single car accident and ran my SUV into a parked car during an ice storm within past three years. My Diablo 6.0 is $ 1,100 every 6 months and my 996TT cab is $ 900 every 6 months.

Maybe I was wrong.

Not true. That's what the original intent of my post is. The Elise is DOUBLE, freakin' double, that of my 996 Twin Turbo and my 2 previous C2's.

My agent said it was in the highest (read: most expensive) category he's seen on a car.

Hmmm... How about:

My agent was the highest he's been while quoting on a car.
Sorry, providing self-entertainment.

Hope you can find someplace more reasonable. Have you tried the collector car route? The rates can be AMAZINGLY low. My problem is, I drive the car too much!!

Hagerty provides good value, but look at the savings versus use restrictions. In my case, Hagerty was 25% or $300 less that State Farm, but I would have to give up lots of freedoms of use and live with a low mileage cap. It just depends on how you use your Lotus, how frequently you use it, and how savings sensitive you are about insurance costs.

LOL @ your entertainment. Maybe he was high.

I will drive it too much also, plus I will do DE's as well, and no way it would cover that.

FYI, Hagerty doesn't have a mileage cap, but it does have restrictions that the standard auto policy does not. I think I posted a pdf of the policy form some time ago.

Hagerty encourages you to drive your car. However, the DE's are another story, so that is probably not your best route.

I must be getting the royal screw! My wife and I pay $2400 a year for $500 deduct, $500k coverages, roadside, collision, uninsured and underinsured for an 05 Elise (non-daily driver, 7k miles a year), a 90 Ford Probe (no collision on that one), and a 2001 Impreza. No tickets, no prior claims. And I'm with Geico. Progressive wouldn't insure the Elise when I called (a year ago now). Where should I switch to?

Just got this email from my agent,

"Thought you might like to know, the rate came back cheaper than the computer gave me the other day. It is $519.68 per 6 months or $86.61 per month."

Woohoo! That's more like it!

Another factor with insurance cost is where you live as far as traffic. (I have Geico and have had it for 14 years). I moved a few miles away and they raised my insurance $200 a year. When I asked them why, they said it was the traffic and incidence of theft in the area. When I first got Geico for my MR2 it was $1200 a year. Then as more people were driving them, plus the safety features dropped it down to $700 a year. (That was full coverage) I was happy.

Perhaps this will happen to the Elise.

Up here in the great white north (Canada), I'd KILL to pay only $150-$200 per month on this car. Or for that matter, on my other cars.

You guys have it good - lighten up and enjoy the ride.

Cheers,
Bill Tebbutt

Woohoo! That's more like it! Yeah, that sounds better - closer to my rate (yours is less, but you're older and married and for some reason, that makes a difference in rates)
