A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Is 06 a better car because of different engine management? Is it possible to make an 05 as an 06 (besides LED tail light)?
Thanks.
A:
Drive by wire throttle in the '06. I don't know how easy that would be to retrofit.

06 have different seats too

hahahha, besides physical difference, i guess the difference is drive by wire throttle and conventional throttle. most people are not happy with DBW, I remember when 06 s2000 has that, s2k purists dont like it that much. how's the performance of DBW compare to the conventional one in elise?
A:
There are a LOT of SMALL differences in the ECUs. The 06 has more capability and is newer technology. It does have DBW, but that's a good thing. Why do you ask? The 06 is less likely to have issues when releasing the throttle which caused some 05s to studder. But I don't think the ECU should have much bearing on which year to buy.

or they don't open or work at all..
A:
Here is something else to consider: the 2005's have the ball end for the throttle cable at the top of the throttle pedal. I you have long feet, size 12 here, you can catch your toe under the ball end and it will disrupt your throttle/clutch coordination every once in awhile.

My dealer just received an ecu update for '05 cars, it' belived to improve
power delivery on low and mid range especially with the air con on, don't
know whether is viable for the Us. market though.

I'd have to call BS on this. There are many great cars with DBW and there are more and more all the time. I'm not an engineer, but, for whatever reason, this is the trend.
This reminds me of all the people (myself included) bitch'n about fuel injection replacing carburetors. I was wrong and would never go back to a carb setup for a car.

Yeah DBW is one "computer" telling another "computer" how much the pedal moved. It's just moving the A/D conversion from near the engine to inside the car.
While it is a bit early in its use, I agree that it ultimately will be the way it's done in all cars someday soon.

Having owned both an 05 and an 06, I have to say the DBW is an improvement. The throttle is definitely more responsive which is a good thing.
As for the ECU's, lets put it this way, there is a reason why Lotus walked away from all the time and money they had invested in the 05 ECU. As a company that is struggling financially, the last thing they would want to do is waste resources to reinvent something they already had.
Oh and before anyone jumps on that last statement, the DBW and Traction Control Code was already incorporated into the 05 ECU. So that is not why they abandoned the 05 ECU.

They wanted to make it even LESS hackable?
