Is the Lotus Elise an Exotic Car?

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
From merriam webster on line dictionary:

1 : introduced from another country : not native to the place where found
2 archaic : FOREIGN, ALIEN
3 : strikingly, excitingly, or mysteriously different or unusual
4 : of or relating to striptease
- ex·ot·i·cal·ly /-ti-k(&-)lE/ adverb
- ex·ot·ic·ness /-tik-n&s/ noun

I think it meets the definition #1 and 3, dunno about 2 - sometimes I think yes when you look at the a/c! #4- definately not.,

I think too many people tie price as to determining exotic, don't necessarily agree, people have loads of different exotic things that are not expensive.

Amen Yoda,
What kind of question is this? OF COURSE ITS EXOTIC! Just look at it. In no way does it fall outside the exotic category. Being expensive is not a prerequisite of exotics, they just typically fall into that classification because of low volume. I think the defining feature is that it is hand made. Just because they can hand make 2000 or more a year does not disqualify it. Not to mention it is also completely recognizable. There is no mistaking an Elise/Exige for any other car and it turns more heads any porsche could dream of. And one last thing...its exotic because by design it has taken itself out of the "practical" rankings unless used for its performance attributes. I know some use it as their daily drivers, but its not because its a comfortable ride to work. If you don't consider your Elise/Exige an exotic, sell it off to someone who will appreciate it

It could fall into #4. I've been propositioned for dirty things on the "hood" of my Elise...of course I wouldn't put my Elise through that torture

Ok let's look at he car for a second:
-aluminium chassis--- exotic
-bonded/extruded chassis---exotic
-mid-rear---exotic
-fiber glass body---exotic
-looks---exotic

Bottom line, I think this car is exotic. Think about it, not all exotic destination in the world are 50,000$ a night exclusive island in the pacific. Cuba is pretty much exotic and cost close to nothing to go there (if you're not from the US of course ).

The Elise is the cheapest of the exotics.

I think it meets the definition #1 and 3 Right.... well so do the Isuzu Vehicross and Subaru Brat,
A:
Steve, don't be hurt by this but the vehicross doesn't even come close to fitting #3 , #1 I give you, maybe even #2

fiber glass body---exotic Every corvette and kit car ever made.

looks---exotic It looks like a mid-engined sportscar.

well, I'll go 50/50 on this one. I personally don't consider it TOO exotic..( because I'm around Elises all the time ).....BUT on the other hand, you wouldn't have 10 guys drooling over a Jeep Grand Cherokee ( about the same price ) at the local coffee shop.

I think Transio is a bit stubborn but always does a d@mn goo job of backing up/defending his opinions...therefore, if you will not agree that the Elise is an exotic car......will you agree that it is the most exotic looking, exotic handling, and exotic feeling sports car ever made? As stated before, I feel like a rock star when I'm driving around in it...and I don't worry about being shown up by too many other cars that you commonly see on the roads.
A:
Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and even Lotus owners have the minority voice in this matter. How does the general public view these vehicles? If this question were posed to the broader audience, what do you think the reponse would be?
A:
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, well.....

oh you're good.
when your insuring the car and the lady on the phone says "make and model?" and you say "lotus elise" and she say "hmm haven't heard of that one...lets see...*click click click of the computer*...hmmm OH MY thats a nice car" that means its an exotic

I agree that the Elise "feels" exotic. Even though its performance is kind of like a suped up Miata, it has an exotic air about it due to its brand and looks. I think the lack of power, the bare interior, and the very affordable price exclude it from that category, though. Most "exotic" cars can do 200+ mph, are reasonably comfortable, and impeccably designed.
A:
Asking exotic car owners which cars qualify as exotic is a little like asking wealthy people how much money you must have to be considered rich.

Don't forget the "general public" elected GWB to a second term in office. I say pose the question to S2000 owners. They're neither biased nor ignorant.

OUCH! not to get political...but I think we'd be kicking ourselves for whichever candidate that made it to the whitehouse. But we're talking cars here...so did you buy an Elise to get back at the oil tycoon because it gets decent gas mileage?

but back to the thread...I work with a buddy who has a tricked out S2000. He races it autoX, track, and visits The Dragon regularly...he has dubbed my car "exotic" and my other co-workers cayman S "NOT exotic". But of course...this is just hearsay

They would rank amoung the most biased in this question.

This kind of sums up my thoughts on the matter:

I don't think because a "lesser" car has some of the feature, that it makes that feature less exotic.

An aluminium chassis is exotic. I don't care if a TT has one (and really I'm surprised to hear that).

Fiber glass body is exotic. Just try to find a shop willing to work on that.

MR is exotic. ok, GM and toyota tried to bring MR to the masses. That doesn't make the MR configuration less exotic. Just to name a few, every modern F1, Indy car, most Ferraris, Lambos or supercar for that matter.

By the way Opel Speedster were made by Lotus and rebadged Opel.

You try too hard to link exotic with $$$.

Nice I like that but if its an "unattainable" price...then nobody can afford it. I went back to homecoming 2 weeks ago to be shown up by another kid in my graduating class with a gallardo. He just saved up all his cash and basically bought a car instead of a house. This is a 25 year old who is a chemical engineer....not Bill Gates or something. Is a Gallardo exotic/supercar????
