If you don't get that a phrase can convey a meaning different than its component words, then this argument is pointless.
So..... what is an exotic car? What you just said would be my argument as to why the Elise IS an exotic car ! Is the Exige Cup an exotic in your book by the way? Because let me tell you something I just saw one in person and if you don't call that an exotic car then you have issues.
It has power, it costs a lot, it is virtually impossible to get in the US and it is not even really street legal? So what do you say? or how bout the Exige S even? Super charged, fast, expensive, hard to get? What is your magic $$ vs Rarity vs Power cut off point? Or is it just a matter of a car magazine telling you what is and isn't "exotic" Again a silly vote, with very silly symantec based arguments. Might as well start in with a , is the xyz car "fast" ...... Exotic was a stupid catch phrase and deserves a quite burial behind a portapotty

No the Exige Cup is not an exotic - it needs to a road car. As a track only car its exoticness competition would be yesterday's starting grid in Brazil. hang on there were 20 of those so they probably aren't exotic
This wasn't a silly vote it was an interesting thread. In the end what is exotic - from cars to vacations is very much in the eye of the beholder.

The "foreign" sense of the word exotic applies in the phrase exotic car this way:
It's foreign to most people in that it isn't seen very often.
It's "excitingly strange" in terms of (exciting) performance unlike that of the usual SUVs and Camrys that clog our roads.
Transio's definition of exotic is "high price tag", "comfortable" and "easy to repair", none of which are related to the fundamental meaning of the word exotic.

Here are some other thoughts on the "Exotic car" question.

By that scale, the Elise only scores 11/23 (the minimum for "probably an exotic").
By the same scale, the 2002 BMW M Coupe scores 14/23.
Also by the same scale, a tuned-up ricer WRX might beat them both.
Also, I think the only cars that score 23/23 are the F40 and 959 Sorry McLaren, you're not a twin-turbo porsche or ferrari! You only get 21/23!

Well as far as what we all think here, I think we have an answer ,81.74 % YES. nuff said on the subject and like that link mentions:
"Posting a definition of "Exotic Cars" on the web is probably the quickest way to attract controversy among motorheads."
In other words troll bait

No mention here referring to location.
In Roscoe, Illinois: Exotic.
In Minocqua, Wisconsin: Very Exotic.
In northern Canada: UFO.
In California & Florida: If they've seen it, it ain't so special.

In my town I see by far, way more Ferraris, Lamborghinis,Aston Martins than I do Elises. I swear I cant go 2 blocks in this town without seeing another friggin Lamborghini! They are like the honda civic of Beverly Hills. So the cars I mentioned above are NOT exotic in my town. They are commuter cars apparently, see them at the grocery store all the time. I think we have 4 Elises in Bev Hills, we must have 90% of the Ferrari/Lamborghini inventory in the world :/ Drive around and you will see a Murcielago about every 10 minutes, and I am not kidding, Larry will back me up

There aren't any trolls here, are there?
Well, if the shoe fits...
Disclaimer:I'm not calling anyone here a 'Troll'.

I get more people staring at me in my Elise than any Porsche, BMW, Jaguar or Mercedes I have ever owned by 100X.
I had 1 person ask me if I liked my Veyron and many people ask me if I like my Ferrari.
I also have had people ask if I like my kit car or "is that thing a toy, it's so little" Those people are the ones that diminish the Elise's exotic car value. I am pretty sure that people with Ferraris and Lambos don't have people asking them if they wind up their car in the morning.
To me its the best car in the world for the money and its the most exotic toy car in the world to most other people! Screw them all, I love it!

The owners of Ferraris in L.A., usually very well versed older gentlemen who own a whole lot of them, never fail to stop and talk to me when I'm in my Lotus. They always have great things to say about the car.
And I say great things about their cars.
Not so much exotics as "sports cars."
For me, growing up no one used the word "exotics," unless you meant Polynesian hookers.
