A&Q about Lotus
Q:
So ... I put my elise back together (long story) and ... had a part left over. Oops. I forgot to put the snorkel back in. Oh well, it can't hurt ... off for a test drive (testing a new stereo).
Stereo sounds great. Yada yada. Whatever.
Now...
I go to pass someone - and nearly scare myself to death! There's a _fantastic_ but very unexpected loud throaty sound. I ease back to 4k rpm and hesitate. WTH was that?? I then realize it's due to the snorkel delete. What? Don't I need an intake for a sound change?? ... so, suddenly curious, I floor it. Goosebumps and spontaneous laughter ensue - it sounds so good.
I don't get it - I've been in cars with intakes; why does the snorkel delete sound soooo good? Maybe the filter box still being there is adding a reverberation? Or perhaps it sounds the same as an intake cept this time I'm in the driver's seat closer to it??
You should try this ...
It costs nothing.
It sounds amazing.
Once you drive around for a little bit (and take it to 8400 a dozen or so times) you can put it back in your car if you want.
wow.
Here's the pictorial instructions below for this simple mod...

Stan did something similar a while back, but added a little something in place of the snorkel. The stock snorkel is a major sound absorber.
Oh, and I suggest you keep the snorkel in your Lotus parts box on the top shelf in your garage. (Don't you have a Lotus parts box by now?)

Funny, Boxster guys have been "de-snorking" for years. there was a lot of discussion about the relative merits - I'm looking forward to hearing the pro/cons of this one.
A:
That's my question.... what are the pros/cons and how easy/difficult is it to remove??

Any CEL?

i just did this "mod", although it looks like the stock set up would get "more" air directly from the side scoop, but if this sounds crazy i am "IN"! going for a drive now and post my finding later

Might want to let it idle for a bit. It's part of the instructions for the CAI to let the ECU readjust, may work in your case to prevent a CEL.

Add a radiused intake entry for some gains and more sound. No CELs. Filter stays clean longer too. See thread below for pics and notes.

did it, but my exhaust is too loud to hear any difference

LOL; I am running stock exhaust. Not sure how you could miss it though.
Neat post Stan. Looks like a trumpet bell.
A:
It does'nt effect protection againt backfires does it?
A:
Does it sound like a buzzbomb?
A:
heh. car already sounded like a buzzbomb to me - thought I'm not sure what a buzzbomb sounds like. Now it's noiser.

I decided to try this mod while repainting my side grills, since I was already in there. I still have the stock cats and exhaust, but on second cam, the sound is surprising when you hear it for the first time. I kept doing it again and again because it sounded soooo good.
Also, based on the throttle response, I felt a little bit more torque (even in the lower rpms). I drove around 100 miles today and no MIL. With this simple mod and the results it gives, I think an aftermarket intake has been scratched off my list.
Thanks to doma and Stan.

So how difficult is it to remove? What's the procedure?

Well, I got ticked at it and started pulling on it. Eventually it came off ... but I don't reccomend this 'Mongo' procedure. A closer look might reveal something you could unscrew or unbolt I guess.

400 miles later ... no CEL. I think I'm in the clear.
