A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Just curious to see how many owners are Brits that live in the Us. I've lived in California since 1990, exported from the North of England (I know).

I'm a transplant too. Arrived here in 2004 on one visa, here now on another, and currently applying for a third type! All very legit by the way.
The last place I lived in the UK was Reading.
We should have a get together some time. How about, uhm, July 4th next year?

I'm also still a British citizen and plan on staying that way. We can get together, but only if you come to California, if I'm travelling that far across the country, I'll continue on and go visit the family

Yes, I live in Manchester & I was curious as to how successful the Lotus marque was in the US, who buys them and how you get to enjoy them. The US - being a country of MMBA between pockets of civilisation (that's Miles & Miles of Bugger All) - doesn't seem like the place where a raw cars like the Elise or Exige could really shine. Also, how easy is it to get hold of a Lotus? Are there dealers that specialise in "toy" cars - in comparison to your usual US models, or do you have to wait for specific order from Norfolk?
Given the fact that Lotus are made over here, they are comparitively rare and spotting one becomes an obssession (just ask the wife) - and we've got a round of drinks to the first person to who spots a new Europa that is not on trade plates or the dealers' demo model!
Sorry this is off message, I know.
Anyway, my best friend & my best girl for my wedding emigrated to Austin straight from university and now lives in Carmel, NY. I now get a lot of comments from her about my "roller skate".
One question I do have is about exhaust emissions - having once had a chat with a fellow obsessive who was about to move to a work placement in the US for 5 years he informed me that he could not bring his S1 Elise over to the US as it would fail the emissions tests and it would be cheaper to buy one in the US than to get Lotus to do the modifications to make it legal!
So, to summarise - I have nothing to do with this thread!
Cheers!

Here since 1981.... learned to drive here though and soon after got 71 Lotus Elan. Still an alien through inertia rather than conviction

Hey Tuz...There are dealers all over the United States in many cities. You can walk in and buy one on the spot with whatever you want on it - Exiges too. Many '05's & '06s available -- '07's coming very soon.
Your pound goes alot further than our dollar - buying one in England for English driving makes alot better sense. But if you're coming here to live -- yeah, I guess you'd buy one here...
They are very rare here and get more looks than just about any sports car or exotic around.
Here's where I bought my car:

Well aside from the pollution I believe the S1 does not meet the rather strict US safety guidlines as far as bumpers, airbag and such. It would not be street legal but could be tracked I imagine. As far as driving in the vast US, well most of my longer trips have been around 200 miles, like Los Angeles to San Diego or up to Santa Barbara and have been fun driving overall. I think if I was going to go cross country it would be no problem but I would seek out the twistiest routes. But in some areas, such as West Texas the only twisties you will find would be in parking structures

From Wales via London (and briefly a S1 Elise) before moving to the Motor City area in 1998
Deposit down on an Exige S. Waiting. Waiting.
A:
You're a lucky lucky man !
I can't wait until I graduate so I can get back into the fold
A:
Originally from Nottingham. Left UK in 1990. Came to US in 1996 via The Bahamas.
I see there are a couple of ET'ers from Reading. Although I never lived there, I do visit Reading a couple of times a year to visit family in Caversham.
A:
I've never owned a Brit but would consider it if I found a bargain.
A:
No chance of finding a cheap Brit I'm afraid sir. LOL

Dumn question. Have you found it difficult to drive on the right side of the road when you first arrive here?
