Thinking about buying an Elise

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
Hey guys, name is Brian and I'm from Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. I'm 22 years old and I recently graduated from FSU, now working and attending grad school part time at nights. I've had a Mustang GT since 16, and I'm looking to upgrade to a sports car. I love the Elise, and have been browsing the forum for some time now. Im wondering if you guys think I can use the car as a daily driver, basically putting 50 miles a day round trip on it. I saw the "daily driver" thread where like 60% of you said it is in fact your DD, but that goes against every review I've read in any car magazine...I don't need the trunk space and gotta love the gas mileage. So what do you guys think?
A:
I use mine as a DD 'cept for rainy days. I've owned the Elise for 3 months now and put wait for it.............6,500 miles on it LOL. I don't know how I racked up so many miles or where the car goes. I think my g/f (who dosen't like the Elise at all) been driving it around when I'm sleeping. Great car to tool around in if you don't have stuff to carry.

looks like its time for a test drive
A:
daily driver? sure if you dont mind the (more expensive than most) maintenance. only car? no way. at least not for me, not around this area
A:
im also thinking of a DD, what do you mean with expensive maintenance. can you explain?
A:
at 1000 miles, you have a scheduled maintenance, which is very important as the dealer checks the ECU log to make sure you didn't abuse your car during break in. should be around $350, but YMMV

every 7500 miles you are supposed to have a scheduled maintenance, which you can do yourself. if you have a dealer do it, it should be a couple hundred dollars ($250-$400). every 15k multiple you have even more things replaced/checked etc. i'm sure you can do it yourself as well. some people here do most of the maintenance themselves. i don't know much about the services yet to do them myself, or about cars in general... i'm trying to learn though

sport pack tires go ~6k. so if you drive 12k miles a year, thats ~$2000 in tires per year, or just 1 set (~$1k) of non-sport AD07s. If you have the A048 tires, you are probably spending more money on tires per mile than you do gas.
12k miles in a year means a service and a half (~$500) if you take it to a dealer. some do oil changes in between services, which can add up also. i just finally did the shifter recall (free) and had them do an oil change, $175 at the local dealer (i have been busy and it was overdue or i could of taken it elsewhere/myself). there is a local place here that will do elise oil changes for $50 + oil. or yourself free+oil+disposal.

as you can see, it can vary greatly i just said "more expensive than most" since other sports cars can add up quickly too.
some classify this car as exotic or semi-exotic, and in those terms, this is dirt cheap.
my fathers z4 on the other hand, in scottsdale AZ, he only pays for tires and oil (if i understand correctly anyways).
A:
wow didnt know the tires were that expensive. wow 6k. geez

but as far as the oil change and all those other things dosnt the insurrance cover them?

We have gieco and they give us 7 year 100,000 miles maintenance (warranty). the dealer just bills our insurance. and its like $65 or $75 every 6 months. Or i might be getting this wrong. i just heard this from my mom.
A:
Ummm I've never heard of an insurance company having a policy for that kind of thing, but I'm not exactly experienced with different features insurance companies have now days, so i could be wrong
A:
well the only thing thats freakin me out are the tires. Didnt know they wearout that fast and that they were 2k each. or 1k each for non sport. lol i always thought smaller tires = less money. my bmw is around 400 each. but they dont wear out fast.
A:
Err, maybe the way i wrote that was a little confusing..
one set of sport (a048s) are $878 from tirerack + install or whatever for a set of 4 tires
one set of non-sport (ad07s) are $808. but from what i've read on elisetalk, a048s go about twice as fast as ad07s. it's different for everyone, depending on how they drive, alignment, etc. there are a lot of threads on it out there

+3 except when heavy snow
A:
LMAOOOO i went back and read it again. now it makes sense to me. they last about 6k. not worth 6k. Wow that makes a big diff. LOL thats not too bad. thank for the help.
