Recommendations for Radar detectors

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
Any recommendations for radar detectors - do they even work?
A:
They work but only if there are other cars on the road to take a hit that will trigger your detector so that you can slow down.

I have Passport 8500x50s in my wife's cars and a V1 that I move between the cars I drive, I prefer the V1 for the arrows but the 8500 works well too and can be found a little cheaper.
A:
I sware by the k40 system and would use nothing else, afew more $ the the v1 but well worth it

I have had a valentine v1 for about 9 years now. No problems with it. With the exception that it is expensive, doesnt have a city mode, and keeps notifying you of new radar sources even after you hit the mute button (which becomes a problem without a city mode because it keeps skwaking at you), I love it. Very intuitive.
A:
V1. You should probably do a search rather than a post.
A:
Coincidentally my dad just did a search on this and he said the best one he found was the Escort ZR3 Shifter It's a "Jammer/ Scrambler - The most advanced laser / Radar detection - Works with passport 8500X 50 red / Blue displays, cordless solo S2, SR7, 7500S radar detecotr Models."

List price is $399. (there are three parts total - two front transmitters/one rear laser transmitter)

If youd like the website let me know

"Your guaranteed not to get a ticket!"
A:
I use the V1 and really like it. It's saved me from 3 tickets so far. The Escort ZR3 Shifter seems interesting but I don't trust any of the reviews online about it. Who knows, it could be paid pundants posting the testimonials (or employees of the company).

I agree that the testimonials may be "paid pundants" but if you go to their website escortradar.com and typin in the Shifter ZR3 in the search it comes up with the same thing and the same ...not feedback/reviews....but the uh...oh whats it called....the statistics of it you could say and they are the same....so if the website says it works and its a best seller i'd trust em' but thats just me

I have both a passport 8500 and a couple of V1's. They both work well but I prefer the V1's arrows because they really are useful and are not just a gimmick. After using these detectors for many years now, I've found that it really is helpful to know where the bogey is coming from. The 8500 has mostly been sitting on the bookshelf gathering dust until once in a while, a friend or family members drops by to borrow it for a road trip or whatever. Get the V1, it's worth the extra $. Also, depending on what state/city/suburb you live in, a lidatek/laser jammer/or whatever you call it to complement the V1 comes in very useful too.
A:
V1, like Porsches, there's no substitute.
A:
I had the latest Passport & was not very happy with it-
I take the same way to work & the detector would go off more from store alarms rather than police

The V1 seldom rates high on such web sites, since the V1 is sold only directly from the manufacturer - there's nothing in it for sellers of other detector brands.

For what it's worth, in other tests (such as C&D, etc.) the V1 consistently comes out on top. Combine that with the fact that the V1 can be upgraded if/when new technology comes out, and you can be far ahead of the game.

Since everyone always tend to think the one you spent your hard earned money on is the best, consider the fact that many, many people that have multiple brands of detectors almost always say they prefer the V1 - this says more than other's preferences when they only have experience with one brand of detector.
A:
My V1 has paid for itself at least six times.
A:
The latest radar detector testing show that the Valentine One is the best all around performer.

I disagree - the V1 is an excellent unit!

A:
Another vote for the V1. Nothing compares to the patented arrows.
A:
I am another that owns both the V1 and the 8500.

The V1 is superior by a large margin. The arrows are equivalent to a radar detector with eyes and a brain... the 8500 makes you feel like you're playing marco polo in a swimming pool with your eyes closed.

As it has been said, I know very few people who have actually owned both that prefer the passport - the vast majority prefer the V1...

I was convinced to try the 8500 based on reviews as well - don't make the same mistake I did...

V1 saved me again on the way to Vegas. Did not even see him must of been hiding in one of those unused onramps. Hiding behind trucks to sneek up behind me but I heard beeping, slowed down changed into the right lane, looked around saw nothing. Looked at the arrows see it was from behind me. Still did not see anything but the semi trucks I just blew past. I kept my slow pace as the signal got stronger then here comes a CHP flying past me.

V1 saved me again. Now I wouldn't want to go around saying "what would my v1 do?". As I am not quite that shallow.
A:
V1 is the only option to seriously consider, IMHO.

Mine has paid for itself several times over. Here's just one example of how:

Say you drive the same route every day, and there's a grocery store with automatic doors. It sets off your alarm. You ignore it because it always beeps right there. Then one day, there's an officer hiding there in the same area, and you're busted.

The counter on the V1 tells you how many sources there are, so you know if it's the "usual" false alarms, or something more.

This is one example, but there are many more. The V1's arrows and counter combine to provide so much more data about what's going on around you that you can deduce information that no other detector can provide.

As for it "not having a city mode", I disagree. I run mine in Advanced Logic mode, and get few false positives around town. You can also disable the X-band, which is where most falses city sources come from (automatic doors, burglar alarms, etc). To my knowledge, no law enforcement uses X-band anymore.
