The range on my key fob has been about 4-5 feet from the car, and it won't activate behind the rear window at all. Is this normal, or are the batteries just worn down? It seems the case in both remotes, and they haven't been used a great deal... other people experience the same???

Yes, this is normal. There is a thread about extending the range by installing an antenae, but it is somewhat involved.
Just chalk it up as another reason to love this car.

It is well worth it though, I did it and got 50+ feet

I just did it last week. (Actually my dad did it, thanks!) Its probably the best mod on my elise to date.

The only expenses should be:
-Two feet of wire (gauge not specific - almost anything will work)
-Bandaids (optional, if you pay attention to the advice to cover up
the sharp metal edges).
If you're doing this mod, I'd suppose your racer is also still a street runner. Good for you.
