Is traction control needed?

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
Hi everyone,

Is traction control a must have for track days, or autocross?
And is it good to have for a compressor kit upgrade?

Thx for you replies!
A:
TC doesn't help at all in autoxing. You can benefit from a LSD, though, in autoxing. For the track I've heard you don't need either.
A:
I tried to get TC on my car when I bought it, but couldn't.

Turns out, I have never missed it. Not on the track, not on the street. Now I'm glad that I don't have it. I don't drive much in the rain.
A:
Traction Control is good. It can also be turned off.

I don't think I've ever felt a benefit from TC.

Well, if it is implimented well, you shouldn't ever feel the benefit. Go run on a wet track. Then turn it off and run again. You will then realize the benefit.

Do you use your TC at all? How do you like it? Impressions?
A:
I really like the TC and leave IT on all the time except for AutoX.

I have hardly ever noticed the TC cut in on the street. The Elise doesnt really have enough power to really need the TC in dry conditions though it is a good safety net to have for wet/slippery conditions. The only repeatable case I have found is under very hard acceleration on uneven roads. Even then it isnt a abrupt drop in power like other cars - more of an easing off that prevents the power from overwhelming the tractions. You can feel the rear end starting to drift before engine makes a puffing noise and the power is basically limited to the same level till you regain traction.

I have even done a couple of AutoX runs with the TC on (forgot to turn it off ) and only lost about 1-1.5 seconds.

All in all I really like it and think its well worth having on street car. You can always turn it off on the track.
A:
I've never noticed it on the street ever kicking in, and typically run with it off while autoxing. Your wet track scenario makes sense though.

Thanks for the info.

I guess I'll use it as a safety net on dry track days.
