A&Q about Lotus
Q:
OK, I've never raced, auto-xed, etc. I hear this term and need some explanation to what it is . If someone can explain it in simple terms I'd appreciate it!
PS I'm running my first auto-x in 3 weeks so I'll be checking out the forum for tips. Anyone else going to be in Charlotte 2nd weekend in December to join me?

Asked and answered many times - here's just one thread to get you started. Have fun @ the auto-x.

Don't bother with heal-and-toe at your first (or second, or third....) autocross. Launch in 1st, shift to 2nd, leave it there.
Depending on your local courses, you may need 1st at times to get that last few tenths of time, but I wouldn't worry a bout that for a long time if you're just starting...leave it in 2nd until the finish, you'll have plenty of other things to work on to pick up time. FWIW, Matthew Braun, who won SuperStock at nationals this year in an Elise, seems to hardly ever shift back down into 1st...just go faster and you won't need it, it seems.

In the Elise you don't use the heel, you more like use the side of the shoe to "blip" the throttle when downshifting because the pedals are so close.
It takes practice to do it that's all I'll say. If you don't know how to heel toe, I wouldn't use the Elise/Exige to practice because you WILL grind the syncros.

A good tip is to not do this while braking and learn to rev match on downshifts first. While traveling at a constant speed, downshift and blip the throttle. Once you get the hang of that start trying while braking.

agreed... another tip that helped me a lot...
I used to constantly blip while throttle while braking coming up to a stop light etc.
I'd put it in neutral, and then while braking coming to a stop, I'd set a target RPM (like 5000 RPM) to hit on a blip and I'd blip while braking, but there's no consequence because I'm in neutral and just coming to a dead stop. You can even do it while sitting still... just mash the brake, then mentally set a target RPM to blip to.
