A&Q about Lotus
Q:
How do you guys get around in these things? I posted earlier how I got pulled over in the first 5 minutes of ownership, and now, for my second "real" time out, another ticket. (Both for around 80mph, nothing exceptionally bad on my part, it's just the "zero tolerance policy" for Lotuses.)
I have the quicksilver exhaust and racing stripes. Any cop with eyes or ears (and most have at least one or the other, I understand) will know I have driven past.
This time, I can trace the fault specifically to having removed the top and not adjusted the Valentine volume to compensate. (Could not hear the warning at all.)
Seriously though, where can I get one of those little sheriffs badges for my license plate? At $150/time out, I may as well cough up as much as $500 in donation to the "police benevolent fund" if that will help.
thanks, and as always, misery loves company.

I got a tubular 8" because I was getting lots of attention too...love it. I can also hear my expensive stereo too. Around town I can putz around on the lower cam and be stealthy...when I wanna play the SC and the cam take over.

www.calsheriffs.org But keep in mind that other than my airport incident, I've never had to find out if it works. I must drive much too slowly.
Whether it works or not, it is good to show support for our Sheriff's. You might also be invited to join the Sheriff's Advisory Board at some point if you truly are interested in assisting their goals. They do make a point of letting people know that having their card, or license plate surround will not protect you against law enforcement.
CHP also has the 1099 Foundation.

Honestly, I drive (pretty close to) the speed limit. I get my go-fast out of the way on the track or at autoxes. When I do want to take her out into the hills, I do it at 7am on a weekend morning. The one time I did get pulled over in the Exige, it was for 50 in a 30 + no insurance card!. I was polite and honest and was able to give him insurance cards for my other three cars. By pure luck he was decent - probably more decent than I deserved - and he let me off.
I drive the GTi faster on the street than the Exige since I can get away with more.

My ticket for 82 MPH was $530. $150 is a bargain.

Holy crap! Were you autocrossing in a playground using kids for cones or what?

We all need those little police sticker thingies. Let's work on it. Who can provide me with an awesome picture of one and we'll counterfeit them. I'll sell them for a lot less than $500 too.
A:
The sticker's don't work, I have even had blueline stickers from my brother (a "tax collector") on my car and it never saved me......Gwinnett County probably has my picture on a bulletin board somewhere.
The only thing that will save you is having a police badge and keeping your license in your badge wallet.

Or...... and I know this will sound radical, how about putting the speed on the track, and staying somewhere near the limits on the streets? Nah.......that would never work.

Dont listen to these wimps telling you to slow down. Just go to the Escort radar website and get their radar loudspeaker, If works very well. You will not miss another alert

Or just don't speed THAT much in the lotus...
I speed, I just don't speed more than 10 over unless I'm in the twisties and I know the road and that there are no on/off entrances in that stretch...
Frankly, I've found myself slowing down the more I drive the lotus... off the track anyway...

80 in a 55 is somewhere near the limits. As I put it to the officer:
"We were just out cruising around, taking it pretty easy. I didn't think we were going that fast."
As much as people say it is not (due to top speed and 0-60 concerns) the Elise IS a supercar, in that it allows one to get to semi-crazy speeds without any signs of it, save those flashing blue lights in the very large mirror. (Now I know why the mirror is so large. )

Actually I do go to the track and have never received a ticket in the Lotus (yet) But if you have ever been to Atlanta, you know that people going the speed limit get run over......and I have received tickets for stupid things other than speeding, just general harassment.
I grew up in Gwinnett County and I think they only recruited the kids that had been picked on in school. My brother is a cop so I hear both sides, I just find it comical that most police feel they can speed because they are police and that other officers (most of the time) let them off when caught.
I remember as a teenager watching a police car turn on his blue lights to get through a light because the Krispy Kreme "HOT" sign was on- wish I had my camera with me . Abuse of power formed my opinion of police early on.....

We have a police force somewhere in the upper 800 range, and only 18 officers who do traffic. You would not believe what I get away with on a daily basis; I would never post it here. And to the brainwashed (by our politicians and insurance companies) "speed kills" safety freaks; I make sure to do my high speed driving at the right time, in the right place, and only when conditions permit (it is safe to do so). It is very rare that I see an officer out on the side of the road with a radar gun; maybe once every 2-3 months. And when I do, my built in SR7 with laser shifters has always picked them up. With the light traffic here in Albuquerque, I actually get to do more high speed driving than in Germany, and I have spent many years driving in Germany. The Autobahns are just too crowded these days to have much fun. Oh, and if you are wondering why they do not place much emphasis on speed monitoring here, if you check the crime statistics and the shortage of police officers here, you will find they really do have much more important things to worry about than taxing law abiding citizens; although they could use the money.

Good man. Most of them are brain washed and want out government to take care of us. You can drive at high speeds safely if you are in the right car and have the proper training. Speed enforcement is more about revenue collection than anything else. It is funny how much empasis they put on driving within the speed limits in this country, and all the safety equipment on cars; how about teaching people how to drive; wow, what a concept! Getting a driver license in this country is really a joke. Like my Dad says, you can just order your license through the Sears catalog in the US!

The first month I had my car I pretty much terrorized my area. Zipping all around doing all kinds of illegal driving things, with no licence plates or registration/inspection stickers. The couple of times I saw policemen they would just look at me go by and then go back to their business. Really wierd.

Are you saying that driving very fast is as safe as driving the speed limit?

Must be nice living in a place where there's little more than desert outside the city limits. You see a radar gun every 2-3 months? You'd really enjoy seeing 4-5 per day and bumper-to-bumper traffic everywhere.
