I've been in bluejae's car - I don't think he gets provoked so much as he goes around provoking people. As to the shopping cart... I've already told him to stop shopping at Wal-Mart.

A:
Today, I went to my dad's house, and when I got to his neighborhood, I saw that they had torn up the street in front of it, and there was a 4-5" vertical drop-off at the entrance. The exit has a more subtle drop-off, though - about 2" with a gradual slope.

So, after pausing for a minute to think about it, I drove up the exit and waved at the security guard and motioned for him to raise the gate, at which he motioned for me to drive around. After a second attempt, I climbed out of my car and politely asked him to raise the exit gate. He walked out of the guardhouse and immediately copped an attitude with me, saying I had to go around. I explained the situation to him calmly and asked if he could raise the gate. He asked my name. I told him. He went inside to talk to the other guard. Then he just stood there. I walked around and talked to the woman on the other side of the guardhouse. I told her the situation.

She told him "ok, open the gate." He refused. At that point, I yelled at him to open the f-king gate (I had a very frustrating morning) and he ran over to the wall and pushed a bunch of butons, raising and lowering all the gates in a retarded unsynchronized dissaray (a bit reflective of their work ethic).

Is that the Del Boca Vista community?

I was coming home around 3 am last night and 2 college guys start pacing me in a late 90's Accord with a fart-can exhaust and a horrible ticking noise from the engine.

The passenger leans and says: "Hey, that car looks like s*** from a dog's ass"

Me: "Yeah, I love dogs."

Him: "... what? Wanna race?"

Me: "Nah man, it's cool"

Him: "F*** you then you *insert racial slur*"

I chose not to dignify that with a response so I just looked straight ahead.

The Accord was sooooo persistant, kept getting next to me, throwing it in neutral and revving it, doing the "rocking horse" thing where they speed up, slow down, speed up.

The light turns red ahead and I groan because I *know* these clowns won't stop here.

Passenger again: "You don't want to race because that pile of s*** is slow huh"

Me: "Exactly "

Passenger: "I bet it doesn't handle for crap either."

Me: "Probably."

Passenger: *Pulls out a drink and takes the lid off like he's about to throw it into the car*

Luckily the light turned green just then and I kind of freaked... added a standing start to my ECU and got into the cams through the first few gears. I merged on the freeway and maintained my "brisk" pace until I couldn't see the Accord anymore...

So after owning the car for 27 hours I've had:

2 negative responses
1 positive

...and about a million kids smiling, pointing, and staring

Let it roll off your back. The good will out weigh the bad.

hey... i haven't been able to drive the car like that for a long while now cuz i needed an oil change... thank you by the way... i don't drive like that all the time... after the oil change... my car just seemed fresh and new...

and about shopping at walmart... i have no real beef with walmart... but i do have a friend who refuses to shop at target... saying that target doesn't or didn't support the troops... or their families... like... if they had to go to fight... walmart would be like... yeah.. your jobs are here waiting for you and health benefits and all that is still there... but target is like... yeah... if you go... you don't get jack when you come back...

i don't know if any of that is true... but i shop wherever i can find a deal...

I was just thinking about the that commercial as I am reading your story. It is OK to take the car to Walmark, just make sure you park far away and on an up hill.

I just got my car. I'm in Misery (I think others call it Missouri) right now. Driving from Columbus, OH to here was quite entertaining. I had only 1 negative response and about 15 positive. I think in smaller midwest towns, they really appreciated seeing a car they've only read about in magazines.

At a Walmart in Ohio where I was picking up the madatory microfiber towels and cleaning stuff along with some painters tape to protect the non-star shield parts on the front end, I had 4 different cars drive by and stop. I was putting on the painters tape, so I was there a few minutes. Every one of them was very nice.
At one point, I made a fool out of myself setting off the alarm by accident and not knowing how to totally disarm it. haha <--me to myself

I literally had 4 or 5 people take pictures of me on the highway. I just waved and they waved back... all cool.

Gas stations are quite interesting now. Surprisingly, most people at least knew it was a Lotus. Most didn't know how powerful or what is special about the car, but after having other cars mis-named by people, I was surprised they got Lotus right. (I had someone call my 996 C2 a 'camaro' once after mis-reading 'carrera' and my 996 Turbo was once called a mustang! by someone who just saw the horse on the crest up front... )

NUGG DAWG... I'm totally offended. I'm a honkey and you made us sound like morons!!!
LOL - kidding of course. Your observation is right on. I don't know how many times in my first day of ownership I got "How much was that thing?" from the honkeys. (hahaha... making myself laugh)
I ended up with this answer...
"How much was that thing?"
me: "What would you guess?"
"$xxxxxx" <--- doesn't matter if that answer is $10k or $200K I would respond, "Good guess."

I wasn't lying... I was just saying good guess.
So tired of that question... I'm sure it's been discussed here before, but how frickin rude. I got that with my M5 a lot too for some reason, but never with the Porsches.

Ironically, they're getting a lot better! The king of honkeys, the Brits, make most of our car, and look how quirky it is. heh

just cruising on the highway at my normal speed.... 75-80ish... and i hear this short rev of a pretty ugly sounding exhaust or something... i look over and it's a trans am... i don't recall all the models and what not but i wasn't about to race this guy anyway... he stays along side me jerking back and forth a couple of times... and then passes me and moves up about 2 car lengths in his lane... and i see his brakes come on... not because there was a car in front of him... but cuz he wanted to get back next to me and start revving some more...

i look over at the driver and he's looking straight forward with his sunglasses on tryin to look real hard and cool ... and doesn't look over at me... he looked like he was just waiting for me to punch it so he could too...

so what did i do?... i took my exit

Well, today I was heading on 2 South I'm doing about 75mph and this Corvette comes up and pass on the left side at about 80 mph.

For the title of the post, it sounds like we're harassed everyday. That's not the case right?

It's been the case in my 2 days of ownership!

lol

The good news is that it's all been positive really. Just tonight... this jeep cuts me off. Takes off... then brakes hard and comes back to me... He yells, "Sorry for cutting you off... it was an accident. Is that a Lotus!? That's my favorite car ever! Damn, you lucky man!"

Then drives off. I actually got an apology from someone cutting me off!!

This is all good because I usually get really sheepish when people comment on my cars, but in this car it's been really fun for some reason.

i've had my fair share of praises... and even one situation where this guy on a bike... not a bicycle... got up next to me and wanted me to pull over cuz he wanted to talk about my car... this was in a restaurant parking lot when i was trying to find parking...

as awkward as it sounded... and kind of freaky too... but i got out cuz i had some friends with my in another car... he gets off his bike... and i get out... and he just goes on and on about the car sounding soooo excited having seen one... and seriously... he was waaaay to excited... and the whole time he kept his helmet on... he pointed at this and that and would go off about it saying how cool it was... i just stood there listening with a smile...

and what i remember the most from what he said was that... he doesn't respect car drivers on the road... but if he sees mine... he'll pull over and let me by...

he thanks me many times... and leaves... that had to have been my strangest encounter... i wish i could have explained it better... but you had to be there...

One time on my way to a buddies place, I was doing about 85 in a 45 Blvd. Very nicely paved and wide so people often speed. So I pass this guy in a Honda TL and he immediately floores it to catch up to me. To make the story short I spanked his ass the 4 miles through this residential area and I make a right to my friends house, and he makes a left. I am parked and walking away from the car when the guy in the TL out of no where shows up and gets out of his car. I'm thinking he was going to swing at me but instead, he goes on about the Elise. Awkward.

Ha! I had almost the EXACT same experience a few weeks ago in my Subaru STi. Except it was a guy in a Mustang. He had all the A-pillar guages and the oversized tachometer and shift light. His behavior was IDENTICAL to the guy you described. I looked over at him, if nothing else to smile and give a thumbs up... I had ZERO intention of taking him on.... He would NOT look over at me. He was busy being cool. He tried for a few MILES to get me to race. No deal, dude. In fact, these guys make me nervous. Their erratic driving behavior could result in a loss of control taking me out with him by virtue of being there. The best thing to do is to REALLY slow down and let them go.

I pull up to the stop light, slowly and sanely, coming to a stop next to a Toyota Corolla or something. Then, my Elise being the joker that she is, she decides to stall out for no reason. This has never really happened before, so I simply start it up and rev it a little bit to keep it from stalling again. Wait... oh crap... did I just rev it? Wait, I wasn't trying to race, certainly the kid in the Corolla heard my enginer stop. Light turns green, little squeak of the tires, and that Corolla takes off. I start normally, watching him lumber away. Oops.
