So are you talking about people doing plus 90 who then try and stuff it into third? Or am I missing something here?
I'm talking about a missed downshift that sends the tach needle well past the
redline. Speedo say's 125 in 6th gear, you misshift to 3rd not 5th= MONEY
SHIFT. Clutchs/ presure plates can also come apart when this happens.

No you weren't Roger. You used to be an S2000 owner, remember? Those went to 9k with no complaints, and had a 12% larger displacement.
Ahh, the good ol' days...

Well, I guess I was also disappointed at the same time...

Stan (here's where I'll put my tribute to stan / bring-him-back-protest) and I have both logged rpms higher than 8500rpm while in 1st gear accelerating. The rev limiter code (at least on the '05 models) is faulty and will allow for over-revs in neutral/lower gears.
It does work well at higher gears though.

In my Mazda RX8 - if you disconnect the battery for 10 minutes the data logged in the ECU is erased - don't know if this is the same for a Lotus - but if so, maybe wise to wipe the ECU before servicing (if you have something to hide that is).
jacks.

It doesn't seem to be set to 8,500 for me! I can get over that just flooring it in first in my 05 Elise.

with batteries that only stay charged for less than a week mine would be resetting all the time !

Embarassingly I mis-shifted on the track today. It completely freaked me out. I was shifting to fifth and hit 3rd. I was trying to shift too quickly and concentrating on my speed. The car definitely hit 9000. Maybe higher. I hit the clutch almost instantly but it made me sick. I came in from the track and listened to the engine for a while and everying sounded fine. So, i finished up the rest of the day. Do I need to get this thing in to have someone look at it or am i just really lucky?

Do a search under warranty voided. And then remember if a major engine or tranny component fails and you have ever hit the rev limiter, you're probably screwed. Be thankful we have a Toyota powertrain.

Mine hits like a wall, I'll have to check the ecu dump, but I doubt I've even hit 8,501!

Don't go by what the dash says, the needle and numbers don't always line up. ECU dump or data logger are far more accurate.

You can get pretty close to 9000 when shifting from 1st to 2nd. The rev limiter floats around and is not a line drawn in the sand. I would not be surprised if close to 80% of the Elise's delivered and driven hard all show close to 9000.

Seems to me from the ECU dumps that have been posted here, the actual spot that the rev limiter finally stops the fun clusters around 8750 to 8800.

a word of advice, you can loose more time on the track trying to make the quick shift and missing it, than you will make up by actually making the quick shift. take your time and make the shift correctly.

i know. I'm not very smooth yet. I get all excited and jumpy. I need to learn to chill and shift smoothly. I can't go very fast if my car doesn't work either.
I just need practice under track conditions.

I did a poll back in April. See if you can find it, and keep in mind most of the results are for breakin ECU dumps, not post breakin dumps, where more people are likely to have pushed the car a bit.

I agree. My dump at 1500 mi revealed several (ok, 4) excursions to 86-8700. I guess the shift light comes up pretty fast.

I have printed alot of ECU dumps, I have not seen 9s accept
from guys that have told me they blew a shift or two.
I'm not a Lotus cheerleader I just work on them, that said I will go on record to say that my Field Engineer has been very fair with our clients. Just remember valve springs are not new forever and twisting motors to the edge
of valve float may lead to accelerated depreciation.
All the best, Don.
P.S. Scotty, this post is not directed to you personally I am just stating my personal comments concerning high R.P.M. on the stock 2zz lunk.
