San Jose Tops in Survey of Poor Roads
If you're commuting to work in California, chances are you've got a bumpy ride ahead.
That's according to a group called the Road Improvement Project, which says five of the nation's ten urban areas with the bumpiest major roads and highways are in the Golden State.
San Jose received the dubious honor of coming in first in the study, with the group rating 66% of the city's roads substandard.
Los Angeles was second.
The San Francisco and Oakland area came in third.
The good news is California has doubled its funding for re-paving projects to $666 million this year.

I got to enjoy those roads yesterday on my way down to San Jose through Oakland. But really, there's nothing wrong with the roads if you treat them as a slalom course to avoid falling into the potholes.

When I first moved here from NM, I was somewhat excited to be in a state that would obvisouly have much, much nicer roads than those in one of the poorest states in the nation... WRONG. I still can't fathom how CA roads are so bad despite how many cars are bought/sold here & how much money is filtered through various people in this state (who all pay taxes)... seems like taxes from car sales alone could repave every road in the state once a year.

Yep, had just gotten home from SLO with the new Elise last December, took a surfing friend for a quick ride, an SUV on 17 shot a 8 inch piece of concrete at us, luckily it did not go through the window and kill us but hit the front, right in front of the tire, sounded like it tore the front of the car off, but luckily only some fiberglass damage...nice way to introduce the car to its new home....it did make me very aware of the issues around here and how easily significant damage can occur, as a result I think have avoided a lot of other things in the road since...

if you car is damaged by the road conditions the state/county/city is responsible to fix it. I have had several friends get compensated for the bad roads. May be if we spread the word the city will have more damage claims give up and fix the roads.

I find it difficult to believe that they could be worse than Detroit. I had to scout out the safe roads in my SUV before I would brave them in the Exige. This isn't improving my confidence with the trip to Lotus of SF. Maybe I should tow it out on the flat bed?
A:
US-101 is incredibly rippled between Redwood City and Santa Clara, but other than that I haven't really noticed bad roads around here. I have been in places with much worse roads.
I have been impressed that although parts of US-101 have just been resurfaced, they are bumpy!

first thanks for instructing my co-driver Sharon at the last AX. She said the instruction was excellent. Her best time was a 42.004. Not bad for her first attempt.
Freeways that are bad. 17 comming out of Los Gatos (CHP recently added it to the motorcycle warning list). They fixed it but only the slow lane.
85 from Homestead to Evelyn. In a Lotus you could loose teeth.
The article was mainly about arterial roads try
Meridian from Foxworthy to Curtner. At 25 mph (I think it is a 40 zone) it is all right but any faster you will loose your alignment.
How about Hamilton from Meridian to Bascom. I know it rained a few days ago but there were pot holes before the rain.
The new rail crossing on Hamilton from Bascom to Frys. That bump is one of those "I heard a bang and thought I broke the frame" bumps.

man its absolutely unbelievable, we get mild tempratures, absolutely no snow and very little rain, plenty of tax revenue, our cops gets paid 6 figures, and we can't even keep our roads in decent shape. Someone needs to get fired.
A:
Many of the rural (i.e. twisty) roads are near unusable in anything but an SUV (I'm thinking Hicks, and lots of the stuff off of Mckean/Uvas)...

Yes, I am currently trying to get some of my money (taxes) back for the HWY 17 damage, initially it was rejected because I only had one estimate, now have two and will be sending it in, however they say there is a 6 month time limit from the time it occurred so we will see, I could lie, but the original est is dated, hmm need to resolve this procrastination problem, seems it is genetic, our 10 year old can't get started on his homework until before breakfast....I will report back what happens. I think there is a good chance based on how well the HWY 17 issue in LG has been documented in the Merc and elsewhere...

101 northbound from santa clara all the way through MV, sunnyvale, etc has been repaved. not fun getting rocks thrown at your paint (and my lower front starshield is missing!! )
i think they are working on southbound now too. hopefully it is all good once complete.

Yeah, the resurfacing sucks. The sections of the highway that were the bumpiest still haven't been touched, and the fresh surface seems to be bumpier than the smooth sections that it was laid on top of. Plus, they seem to be scattering fresh gravel across the road every morning, which gets cleaned up slowly as cars kick up the rocks and bounce them off other cars.
