A&Q about Lotus
Q:
Hope the repairs go well. I don't think they'll put the starshield on until the paint has fully cured. Could be up to a month.

So, since my baby is over at Specialty Car Craft, I told Luke and his wife (two very cool people, btw) that I would keep an eye on their baby. I also promised Luke I would post pictures of the "before." Steve, owner of Specialty, thought this would be a very cool "before/during/after" photo op. So, here we go. I'll take some more pictures once the clam comes off, and as work progresses.
From what I can see, she definitely needs a new clamshell and crash structure. I imagine that's the worst of it.
I had told Luke that I thought having the tow hook in probably was the cause of the crash structure damage. Then, CJ (IBCJ), Patrick (Patricko), and myself took a closer look. While having the tow hook in certainly didn't help, it didn't appear to do the brunt of the damage.
Take a deep breath, Luke. She'll be good as new!

How fast were you going?

Hey, are those OE-254's?
Thanks! And yes, they are OE-254's. I'm technically not a devildog, though that would be a compliment. I'm the Batallion Surgeon (NAVY) for 3/7. Ooo-Rah!

They tell me they can put it on 2-3 days after. Should I be worried?

I've heard this, and I've spoken to Steve about it. He believes that the time the car spends in his kiln eliminates most of the outgassing. I've had Starshield applied (after work at Specialty) as early as two days later, without any outgassing problems over a year later.

sounds like she was rolling to an uncontrolled stop, I'm guessing 5-10 MPH at the most.

Alan, you rule. Thanx for taking the pics, this is my very first look at the damage. Looks like the tow hook itself actually survived! That's $70 I DON'T have to spend at Sector 111 again
I'm told 2-3 weeks, but I want them to take their time. It's sad to see this car like this... I buy it brand new, I leave to train for a month, and in the time I'm gone, it has the rear clam removed (for the self-exploding rear window), and the front clam / crash structure replaced for this... It's like a different car when I will see it again...
Morale of the story: Don't leave for a month ever again. I think my wife would like that. I'll tell my CO.

Hope your CO understands, lol! Reminds me of "Apocalypse Now,": "Never get out of the boat!"
Well, your car is certainly experiencing growing pains. But, if you take a look at my other thread, you'll see enough spent clams in the background of the pics to know you're not alone.
I'll take a closer look at the tow hook tomorrow and photograph it. If memory serves me correctly, it was in pretty decent shape. Not certain if it was bent.

Luke's reaction to the pics:
...Steve... PLEASE...FIX... EVERYTHING!
... Alan... you're probably right, that tow hook is connected to a very solid part of the car (crash structure?), so I expect it to cause damage when impacted... what I did not expect was that it would be impacting anything in the first place! oh, such is life...
Thanx again for posting the pics, I owe you a beer or ten.

The CO will not understand. But I can tell you EXACTLY when I'm getting off this boat: July 2007. There is hope.

For the record, I appreciate your service. Like I said earlier, I never served, but did work on "JAG" for four years, and spent 80% of my time either on military bases or in the studio with military personnel. Some of the finest people I ever had the privilege to meet.

Holy CRAP, Dude! I was the Battalion Surgeon for NMCB SEVEN for 2 years from JUL02-JUL04. We spent time with 3/7 over in the sandbox around the Ad Diwaniyah area in '03. You guys kick ARSE!
Where are you going when you finish your GMO?

Serebo1, it is really cool that you are taking the time to help a soldier out. I would be going crazy to be away from home and know that my baby is all broken. I am sure Luke can keep his mind on his work knowing that a fella Elise talker is looking out for his ride. Good work.

+1
Thanks for helping out a fellow serviceman.

I can't tell you how much of a pleasure it is. Like I said earlier, although I never served, I had the distinct pleasure of working on JAG for four years. This is when I was trying to break into screenwriting. My job on the show was in location management, and my duties included serving as a liason between the show and the military. I spent many days each year at military bases - pretty much had a room at Pt. Mugu NAWS.
In that time, I developed an unqualified respect for the men and women who, as Demi Moore says in "A Few Good Men," '...stand upon a wall and say, "Nothing's going to hurt you tonight, not on my watch."
While I'd be there for any ET member in need, in this case it's the least I can do.

Thanx again Alan. If it looks reusable, just toss it into the back of the car somewhere... And again, thanks for all the effort on this little side project. it really does feel better when someone's looking after the car like that.
I hope Henry isn't feeling under pressure that his work is being scrutinized by so many in his very community. Then again he sounded very confident on the phone, so I believe he'll just do an excellent job.
To all you guys supporting the Active Duty... Thanks!! The real credit goes to these Marines, they go out and do their magic under fire day in, day out. I just treat them...

Wow... small world. I got to 3/7 in Aug '05, I deployed to Ramadi for 7 months, came back about 5 mo ago. I don't think I'll make the next deployment, they're not scheduled until July '07. Unless things change...
I'll finish my obligation (2 more years) somewhere in San Diego, hopefully. Don't get me wrong, I love the Marines - much less whiney than sailors (one of my guys was walking on a comminuted distal fibula for 3 days in Iraq before he presented to me saying, - Doc, the foot just does not feel right...), and they have by far the most comfortable and low-maintenance uniforms. What sucks about 29 Palms is that I only see my wife on the weekends...
But I digress... just to keep on topic, I drove (and even fired the main gun on) an M1A1 Abrams over there a couple of times - 71 tons, 1500hp in a turbine engine - the Anti-Elise. It's a little slower than the Elise, I don't know what the 0-60 is because I could only get it up to about 45MPH. What it lacks in speed and agility it makes up in torque... there is NO stopping that mofo.
