do you answer your cell phone in your Elise?

A&Q about Lotus

Q:
Talking to Serebo1 when we are both in our cars can be quite entertaining. I can't understand anything he says and it always sounds like he's on the track.
A:
My wife just call me a little while ago. She was stopped at a light next to a red Elise. She couldn't say "Hi" to the driver or anything because he was talking on his cell phone. When the light changed, he took off down the road. According to her, "He was all over the road!". People think they are in control when they are driving and talking on the cell phone, but they are not...

Out of niceness, I won't say what the Elise's personalized plates were...
A:
Can't hear it "ring," can't feel the vibrator, can't hear what they'd have to say anyway. That's what voice mail is for.
A:
Leave phone off. Drive, survive.
Repeat.
A:
I must be the only one who will admit to talking on the phone while driving. I typically use a headset but I do it all the time. Can I hear, not very well, it does limit communication which sometimes can be a good thing for a relationship. I have found the person on the other end of the call get frustrated and hangs up far before I do.

Now I will admit that it is a little more difficult with the Exige than my other cars.

I have even been known to use my blackberry and send emails while driving. In the RV it is easy in the Exige a real challenge. Is it safe?... Nope, but neither are the cornering speeds that I tend to do while in the Exige (while on the phone).

Now there are times where the phone gets put aside so that I can enjoy the car, but when I am on the freeway driving from point A to B, I use it.

I am now open to be flamed by everyone who thinks only the would do this.
A:
so... those of you that are talking about not using phones.. have you removed your radios also so you dont fiddle with them?
A:
Nn I don't - I have only two hands, and no hands-free phone!

I'll tell you what, I'll be okay with anyone that uses his cell phone for no more than a second - which is all the time it takes me to press the pre-set button on my radio. And I usually only do that while sitting at a stop light.

One second to mindless press the pre-set is not nearly the same thing as 20 minute, deep thought, distracting cell phone conversations.

I don't see people driving all over their lane, swerving, tailgating, and in general driving like idiots while pressing their radio pre-set. I do observe this with people talking on cell phones.

I am one of the 3 people in the US that doesn't yet have a cellphone. Problem solved. If I get into trouble on the road someone else will surely have one, so I'm okay. At least in theory.

There's a radio in the Elise?
A:
Got my cell phone a few years back. Driving a Miata then. I would call my wife before leaving the office. In one week she called me every day on the way home in my car! I told her it was dangerous answering the phone in a stickshift. Her reply was if it is that bad don't answer the phone. My reply was you know I was in the car and if you call it may be an emergency.

I finally gave up the argument and threw the phone away.

Phoneless and free.

have fun

Nick

I'm #2. I hate the f'ing things. People who think they need one have a problem with self importance.

But what if they are calling their dealer to ask about where to buy touring wheels? Then is it ok?

In all seriousness I think it should be at the owner's discretion. I have seen accidents due to cell phone usage, I have also been rear-ended because someone was fumbling with the cd player. If someone is talking on their phone and causes a wreck, ok ticket them. But I dont believe that banning all people from using phones is the answer (not that im saying you have said this etc etc).

Im not a huge fan of the bluetooth headsets, i cant seem to hear sh*t out of them.

Get one with a powerful DSP (digital signal processor). nXZEN has one with noise cancellation... might want to check them out.

Hardly the case, most have them to support business and familiy. It is hardly to be self important, that might have been the case in the 80's and early 90's.

I recall hearing someone once say something similar about computers (and probably automobiles).

You do not have to get one, but let's not make judegement statements about the other 90% of society.

Nope - I 'fessed up on the previous page... I drive from Baltimore to the edge of DC every day and that is too many hours out of the day to be ignoring all the calls. I agree with Tim and others it is not a good habit, however, if the call is going to require deep thought or the other person is making me agitated, I do pull over or stop the call. Otherwise I am either going to say something careless that would get me in trouble at work or I am going to drive like an idiot. (Well some might think I do the latter anyway I suppose... without the phone)

I hate my cell phone, but use it to stay in touch with my FedEx business; it is of critical imortance that I have one. Now that I have the Razor with Blue Tooth and the earpiece, I have to admit I feel pretty important. While talking to what appears to be nothing, I look down on all the other commoners who are still holding their cell phones to their ears; they are clearly not as important as I am, and I am a better person than them. SAElise, what is it like to be a commoner?
