A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I have purchased a new white 350 and when i went to pick it up there was this noise. It had 23 klm on it. I started the car and sat with the door opened with it running. When you push the clutch pedal it sounds like a throwout bearing is going to go. They told me it would be looked at it, not to worry about it.. The car now has 4000 klm it and that noise is still there.
Everything works great and it all is good but i just cant get passed the noise. Now i went to 3 different nissan dealerships and they let me go to 6 different brand new cars and they all had this noise. I even ran into a guy with a 2003 model and he had it as well. I phoned nissan head office and they told me it was a "characteristic" of that tranny if all the cars had it
which makes sense. I have a reference number tagged to my conversation with head office, just in case. Anyone else have this noise????
if you do i would contact headoffice. You know what they tried with the front geometry problem in the beginning. Z and G35,s going through tires
like no tomorrow. would love to hear from fellow 350z owners...Bill

Yes. I have that noise as well. It sounds like a sloppy rattling throw out bearing - and I have it while the clutch is NOT depressed, and the engine idling.

I only notice the triple cone noise when I engage the clutch in first gear easily. If I rev it and take off fast no problem. If I am idling in neutral no noise. It is the price you pay for a nice shifting car IHMO.
If the noise gets worse you would perhaps be experiencing a bad throwout beaing or dry pilot bearing. Generally, that it like a squeal not a rattle. This noise is kinda like a rattling rotating sound as you engage the clutch.
This is the noise you are describing right?

The noise you are talking about is the dual mass flywheel. Yes, it rattles just like the Corvette since it uses one too. The idea is that the center part of the flywheel is on a bearing and it has rubber bump stops so when you shift the gears all that horsepower and torque will not trash the gears in the transmission. If you have the howl instead of the knocking noise it is the input shaft bearing. Remember that this manual transmission has no oiling provision unless the car is in motion. That is, when the car is at idle and nothing is moving all you are doing is turning the input shaft when the transmission has the clutch out. When it is pressed in you are on the throw out bearing. Only when the transmission is in gear will the output shaft spin and that is what lubricates the transmission. So, do not warm up the car too much or the input shaft bearing will start to wear and cause a howling noise. I know this since I have had my transmission replaced under warranty. Toyo Kogo bearings are not as good as Temkin bearings for taking dry run abuse.
