Who here changes their own oil?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Just did my first oil change on my Z. Wasn't as hard as I thought. Now I if I can only figure out how to change the tire by myself, I can cancel my membership to AAA (probably wont though, just in case!)

people are too lazy to change their own oil??? jeez they need to get a life... it's way too easy to have some punk teenager working at a jiffy lube F*** something up for me... its the same reason why you DON'T GO to walmart to get tires for your car... go to Discount or something... they may still be teens but atleast they know what they're talking about...

anyways... i change oil myself, brakes probably exhaust whenever i get it... and anything else i can easily get to... i don't do anything i know is outta my reach... ex... ECU work... pulley install (too much a pain in the a$$)... but anything else.... i cool with...

I wouldn't try changing tires... that is if your talking about taking the tire off the rims and putting new tires on... that's way too much trouble with out proper tools/machines...

It's not that I'm too lazy to change oil, but here in Ontario where I live at least, disposing of the dirty oil is an immense challenge, as hazardous waste removal is extremely far away, and there is no other way of getting rid of waste oil. I'd rather have Jiffy Lube go through that hassle.

It's incredible people still dump oil like you do. Why not pour it down a storm drain? Or just dig a hole at the school yard and pour it there?

You're so proud you do some maintenance, you put people down for not doing the same, yet you're too damn lazy and selfish to finish the job properly.

Way to go, static.

At age 47, why in the hell would I want to change my own oil? I have housekeepers and gardeners too. I changed my own oil in my 20's, and enjoyed getting my hands greasy, but I'm over it. I'd rather surf the net and spend more time on 350z boards.

there used to be pics on changing the oil by yourself. just curious. i think i will continue to have it done by the dealer or some moma papa shop if they are reputable.

stativic, all you need to do is take your used oil to an auto parts store. they will dispose it properly.

I have always tired to change my own oil. It seems whenever I have someone else do it they screw it up. Over fill, underfill, oil in the interior, bend the dip stick, break the oil sender, drownd my starter, scratch my car, forget screws, strip drain plug, loose drain plug, wrong oil filter. You name it. I mean it's not rocket science so WTF???? I keep trying every so often to save some time.

I think I finally have given up.... I'll do my own oil, thank you. Even the Nissan dealer FU'd this simple process with my first free oil change. All I wanted to see was the oil in a pan so that I could check it for sediment/metal as well as the filter so that I could cut it open. Yes sir, Yes sir! Oops, the tech made a mistake and your oil is mixed in with all of this other oil and here's a oil filter you can cut open to see what it looks like just like yours. Dealers are idiots. I was so pissed. I should have done my first oil change as well.

I hope I have learned my lesson ... I need to continue to do my own oil changes.

Now on the Z, I found that you can take a set of tin snips cut the oil access panel so that you do not have to take out the front six screws.
When you reinstall the panel just overlap the panel so that no air can get in between them. Saves time and hassle since those front screws on mine hold on my air splitter. It works great and it is much quicker now with only 6 screw to undo. Drive her on the ramps, Electric screw driver, filter wrench and 5 mins. Done.... It helps that I can dump my oil around the corner at the auto parts store too.

If you have your oil done by someone else .... just make sure the level is correct. I was amazed how many times I was overfilled. This is not good !!

Dealer did my 1st one and when I did the 2'nd the oil filter came off by hand with, like no pressure. I know it's not supposed to be torqued on but this one could have fallen off and it leaked a bit on the underbody panel. another reason to not let the dealer touch it except for warranty issues. No one loves my car like I do!

Long Beach Jim: You'll have housekeepers and gardeners in the nursing home, too. Why rush it?

Changing your own oil and doing the routine service checks is an opportunity for further bonding with the car. Or, it's a waste of valuable time better spent working on one's portfolio. I made a New Year's resolution to spend less time with my family, and oil changes are a step in that direction. The resolution was their idea.
