A&Q about 350Z
Q:
For those of you who own a 350 with 6-spd MT, I am curious as to what your lowest cruising speeds are in a given gear. Let's say you've finished acellerating and you want to cruise at a constant speed. What is the lowest speed before downshifting in a given gear?
I know the manual gives advice about this, but I don't think any of us cruise at 35 in 6th gear.
Me:
2nd: 7 MPH
3rd: 18 MPH
4th: 29 MPH
5th: 36 MPH
6th: 53 MPH

i only go by feel and trying to keep the revs at 1500 to 2000, don't look at speedo to shift, lookey at tackey.....

Yeah, I use the tach when acellerating or slowing. I also used it and the feel of the engine to come up with those ideal speeds for downshifting for me.
After a driving the car every day, you have to admit that you've noticed the approximate speeds at which you usually downshift.

ok... answer this... i get better gas milage (per MPG readout on dash) going 70 in 5th than i do 70 in 6th... but if i hit 80 in 6th i get around the same MPG BTW rpms are at ~3k at this speed and 6th gear...
the whole 1200 to 2000 is incorrect (for my car atleast) i though it was weird so i decided to check it out... i reset the MPG (b/c it stores the info to get an Average) and started from scratch...
I can get from a 2-3k range regular acceleration... up to 70 mph... 19.5 MPG
I get from same acceleration in 2.5-3.5k range up to 70... 20.2 MPG
highway cruising @ 70 -n- 6th 20.4 MPG
Highway cruising @ 80-85 -n- 6th 22.1 MPG
downshifting on offramp... keeping the RPMs under 3.5k i get 23 MPG

?? I'm getting 27.3mpg in 6th at 72mph. That is my best so far. I alway run through 5/6 of a tank and use the same pump to get accurate mpg test results. The gauge is the car is pretty close to what I see. Maybe .5mpg off. It can be one way or another. I rarely get less than 23.5mpg. Unless I am stomping on it all over the place. Then the worst full tank has been 20.5mpg. My car is stock except for: grounding kit (however, that got to be worth 3mpg-lol),Popcharger, on 17" wheels tires aired to 33rear-35ftpsi. and filled with Redline 5-30 synthetic oil. I have 8K miles on the car.

best mpg: 32.1mpg from Washington DC to richmond @ 70mph in 6th (2500rpm).
avg mpg: 15.5mpg (city driving, flogging the crap out of it)
since i've got the tilton clutch/flywheel combo, i have to keep my rpm's @ 2500 or above, so my minimal gear speeds are:
2nd: 22
3rd: 32
4th: 41
5th: 55
6th: 68
the 3.917 final drive is going in next week, so this will all change, i'll update with new #'s
