hawk pads :(

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

i was at the dealer last week having another driver side window issue resolved. i know i posted in the past the squeeking problem i was having in the past with my hawk pads. when i had the dealer check the problem their resolve was to turn my stop tech slotted rotors and install new pads. take into consideration this is the same dealer that sold and installed the the pads and rotors. they basically said live with theproblem or due the above. actually they said go with the nismo pads the next time. well here is the kicker when driving between 15 & 30mph if i run over the little orange reflectors in the road i get like a clicking noise in the front. i first noticed this when driving in an indoor structure. when having the window fixed i had them check out this noise. now it comes down to the 2 things they tell me. first its either the hawk pads in the front, they say that the pins are not snug that slide through the pads. they took them out an greased them however this did not fix. second its the calipers. well i asked them if i replace the pads and turn rotors and this is not the fix then what? they said they would order new calipers under warranty. basically lose out on the $$ spent on the new pads and turned rotors. take into consideration i have 4k on the pads at present. i am know waiting to hear back from them to determine whats up. yesterday when i spoke to the parts guy who was off last week he said it sounds like the wheel bearing tsb. . any input would be helpful. the dealer in question i have regarded as one of the best .

Interesting - mine have never sqeaked and I did not turn the rotors either. Still grab like new after 6000 miles and no dust. Love mine.

steve, i was under the impression that you could get away without turning the rotors especially in my case with such limitied wear on them. the dealer indicated that if i didn't turn them, later down the road i would encounter some pulsating as the pads wear more. i dunno thats what they tell me?

Reno,

The dealer told me I needed to turn the rotors and I did and I experienced the pulsating clunk sound right after I did the install. I followed the directions on the box on how to break them in but it still pulsates and clunks.

I don’t know could it be that the rotor doesn’t have enough material after they got turned??

My Hawks are quiet on stock rotors with 10k miles on them.

Just had HP+ pads put on yesterday -- had to turn rotors today because of squealing (sounded like the key-copying machines at home depot, only not as loud)...

the HP+'s are nice, but if you don't get on them for a while and they cool down, you'll get a bit of squeal on a slow to stop... the bite can't be beat, though (do a couple triple-digit slowdowns and that'll warm them up just fine :p)

Get the brake shim kit from Nissan parts department for twenty bucks and the noise will go away. No, the entire shim kit is not installed at the factory and most dealers are unaware of the kit. Go to the parts guy and he can look it up. I went through the turning of rotors and three different types of pads before I asked the parts guy and he hooked me up. The noise is gone. But, I am out the cost of rotors and turning the old rotors and three different sets of pads. The shim kit does the trick.

The wheel bearing issue is on the rear of the car and not the front. Check out the TSB.
