Nismo Intake - Steet Use?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

The Nismo Website's description of the Nismo S Tune intake says the intake is "not for street use".

What does this mean? Is it not street legal or make the car unbearably loud? I already purchased the part before I noticed the language on the part description. It's on it's way, I hope I didn't just waste $250.

Anyone else have this intake? Your comments will be appreciated.

That's weird! I never heard that before.

I have it, not loud at all! Just a perfect sound!

A:

nope dont worry about it, its fine. Its just a liability thing they have to say or something to that effect. plenty of people have the nismo intake, you wont have a problem.

Just read this a minute ago.

I think that's a disclaimer. Before I bought it, I never read anything like that.

That's the disclaimer I read, but on another site. You can see why I was concerned.

I've had mine over a year now. perfromance nissan installed it no problems. some of the more problematic dealers will cry about the product if any service related issues occur. yes it is an r-tune product and does not carry any warranty unlike the nismo cat back and other s-tune products.

Besides the warrenty issue you have to worry about getting an OE number or CARB number with any performance mods done to a car. In most cases if the part says " for off-highway use" that usually means it is not a smog legal part. That means when your car comes up for smog you won't pass the visual part of the test becuase you will be missing the OE or CARB number that all smog techs are supposed to imput into the machine when they see a performance part on a car. Also as I understand it R-tune parts void the warrenty and S-tune parts are accepted by the warrenty.

I'm getting extremely tiresome from all this smog legal bullshit. I think I should go into politics, I'm fairly well spoken and only about 1/3 insane versus the average 2/3+ insanity rating for the politicians I am aware of.

The Carb designation is why I went with the JWT System - Jim Wolfe Technology.

They spent the time and money to get it carb approved. It even comes with the sticker you can install on the shield so the smog tech doesn't question it.

The other thing you can do is reinstall your stock air box before you go to have your car smogged five years from now. That is if you remember where you put it.

Not a big deal just not having to swap it out each time is one less thing I have to remember.

On a street car it is best to not mess with the feds. You'll lose. It is not cheap either. Like $1500 for a first offense. However, I do not know anyone that has got that ticket yet. It can happen; if the cop inspects your car during a stop for exhaust etc...

I believe it is coming in the near future.

If you want a car with more power, it is just easier these days to upgrade your car or make sure it is smog approved than to mess with the smog implications. IMHO

I'm waiting for the smog approved SC. That is just around the corner.

Besides the CARB exemptions for Californians, there is the practical implications of hydrolocking the engine by ingesting water, which really isn't very likely, but what is likely is the filter getting covered in grime, which will hurt rather than help your performance, never mind being a maintenance headache.

Cold air intakes are only really suitable for track usage, on the street they are nothing but a problem. Ram-air intake kits like the K&N Typhoon or even (shudder) the Weapon-R system avoid these caveats.
