Installing aftermarket wing

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hey guys,
I have a question. I want to purchase a Suzuka Wing for my dad's '05 Z for Christmas, but I was wondering about the installation. The car has a rear valence, and he'd like to remove it and put the wing on. Has anyone here done that before? The Nissan dealer is sketchy about details because they of course want it to be purchase from them and installed by them. Can anyone tell me if there are pre-drilled holes in the wing? If there are, once the valence is removed do the holes meet so that new one's don't have to be drilled?

If anyone has done this any information would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you in advance for your help.

Ah unless your Dad's 350Z is a TT with over 500HP and used on the track only. Why is the world would you want to put something like that on a street 350Z. I do not think anyone has done such a mod to a street car. It would take serious reinforcement. Perhaps you could fab up a steel plate on the backside of the deck. However, that wind design gains you nothing but adds weight to the car until over 170mph per the tests I have read. You would just slow down a stock car. Forget about using the rear hatch since the thing is so huge.

I mean really.... are you serious or just pulling our leg?

"Suzuka tested bi-plane wing configurations but didn’t find significant gains. The P35 was tested with the standard two-element Pershing Nissan GTP wing mounted low with a NACA422 single-element top wing mounted high. Suzuka concluded that the gains were minimal and that the additional weight hung out past the rear axle might counteract any aerodynamic gain, “I adopted the twin wing for Daytona only. There was a slight benefit, but only for that specific track”.

Edit - Honest mistake. My search of over 10 items didn't show the one pictured below. My mistake sorry. Too many kids pulling our legs lately.

A simple Google search of Suzuka 350Z revealed this:

I suspect she's looking at this for her dad's car rather than the GTP monster you were so quick to beat her with.

I'm not keen on wings at all, but if that's what she thinks her dad will enjoy, then maybe someone can actually answer her installation question.

350Zchic, the rear spoiler that comes with your dad's 350z have holes drilled to hold it in place. I just don't know if the wing that you like as shown above needs additional drilling. It looks good, but you still have to take it to the paint shop.

Thanks to those who gave advise. My dad actually showed me the wing he wanted, this isn't something I just closed my eyes and picked :-) He's checked out all the spoilers, wings, etc, etc and wants something specifically made for the Z. He like the Suzuka wing best, but all searches simply revealed pics and cost and places to order, but no mention of installation.

Those pics that 72n03zs posted are the exact wing he wants. I will try a search on instructions to see what I come up with. I know it will have to be painted, but he mainly questioned whether or not this was something he could install himself. There is no purpose for this wing, other then aesthetics. If I have to order it and have it installed professionally, then I will.

I appreciate everyone's input, I didn't want to purchase this thing blindly without any knowledge of what goes into placing this on his car if it turned out to be a gigantic project, or an expensive one. :-) Thanks again for your help! It's much appreciated.

350zchic:
A body shop will definitely need to install that wing in order to make it look good. Honestly, any decent body shop should know exactly how to install it (since thats what they do) so I wouldn't worry yourself with the installation.

Installing a wing like that is definitely something that you won't be doing yourself, unless you're comfortable with drilling holes, welding, using bondo, and re-painting the rear hatch. That said, it will probably cost around $500-$800 to have that wing properly installed by a bodyshop and painted to match the car as shown in the pics.

350zchic: if it's the nismo wing you are talking about... i had one installed on my car... the main problems you are looking at are

1) proper fitment... the wing that i purchased was made from a mold, still... the fitment on the body wasn't perfect, on the parts where the wing leans down towards the front, close to the body (the ends) one side is about a quarter inch from the surface of the trunk hatch and the other side is about 1/8th of an inch... granted that the differences are negligable unless you are really lookng closely at every corner of the car... people just walking by will not notice this... also, the mounting surface that actually is the porting that is bolted to the trunk hatch may not be completely flush with the hatch itself... therefore make sure that which ever shop you get to do it can "fill" this properly where no evidence of this can be shown...

2) the holes most likely WILL NOT line up with the ones from the factory spoiler... i'm assuming you are refering to the small 3-4 inch wide spoiler that sits on the very end of the hatch... in that case no... there are 4 1/4 inch bolts that are situated near the middle of the spoiler that are "self-tapped" into the spoiler for mounting... so YES they will have to drill holes into the hatch to mount it... and BE CAREFUL and ask over and over about the seal!!! because i asked the guy that installed mine if he made sure that it was well sealed and he gave me his UPMOST confidence that it would not leak... i left it in the rain about 3-4 days later with ALL my college books (5-6 books ranging from $80 to about $150) ALL DESTROYED by water...so needless to say i was pissed... so i sealed it myself... and haven't had a problem since... i guess that's the type of work i get for $100 for the install...

but after working out all the kinks and bugs... the spoiler looks really sweet IMO... it accents the cars curves nicely and even adds a little Porsche flare to it... like i've said before... i've actually had someone ask "Are you driving the Porsche outside?" and i had to say it was a Nissan... o-well... but you get what i'm saying i hope...

here are some pics of the final install:

i hope that isn't too many pictures...

whatcha saying tay-fu? do you not like carbon fiber?

SRL311: yup... i agree that's why i don't have a wing i have a "spoiler"... and it shouldn't be classified as rice seeing how it was designed by Nismo... i would consider rice to be anything other than OEM or In-House tuner's (Nismo) design... hmm... make a list? APC, Wings West, Black Widow, Kamakazi, or any other ricer, trendy sorry ass excuse for a part maker name...

not to mention i bought it because i like it... not to please you... next thing you'll probably mention is that the Kicker subs are stupid too huh?

heh... O-freaking-well...
